CLASSIC WOODEN BOAT APACHE – Looking Very Sad

Earlier in the week I was in Thames and dropped down to the Thames Sailing Club marina. I have covered on WW before most of the residents that inhabit the marina.

One that caught my eye was the1939 launch – APACHE, she appeared to be ’stuck’ in her mud berth i.e. I visited at low and mid tide and she had not risen with the tide.

APACHE has made several appearances on WW and sadly is looking very tired and in need of a new caretaker, there was a 4sale note on her window.

From previous stories we have learnt that she was probably built by a Mr. McCallum, with the help of a Lou Burn.

In 2020 Bryce Strong sent in several photos of her – the b/w photo of her above before the addition of the rear dodger, seen in the cockpit photo. Byrce also later supplied the colour gallery of her looking very smart. Ken Rickets supplied the last photo showing (L>R) GAY DAWN, ALOFA, APACHE at Kawau Island.

  1. She has the cool kind of Chevy top like Kingfish . Actually where is Kingfish now? She was with the Pollard’s a few years ago. I nearly bought her but bit much work for me.

  2. Ok, so I called the Thames Marina number from the Sailing Club website and got hold of Peter (didn’t catch his last name), who very kindly went and took a photo of the For Sale sign which showed the contact phone number.

    Phone number is 07 868 9404.

Which I rang and got hold of Rose, who with her husband, are in fact selling it, due to the gentleman getting too frail to look after the boat.

They want $65,000 for the boat, a dinghy, the berth and other items. Apparently the engine is running fine the last time they used it about 4 years ago I understand.

I’m going to pass on the purchase, 65k seems a bit steep to me. Possibly room for negotiation I’m sure.

Good luck to anyone else interested in her.

  3. Hi, did you happen to take a photo of the for sale sign? It looks like there is a number on it. If no photo, did you take a note of the number? Again, if not, I’ll give the sailing club a call.

    Thanks

  4. I remember her from about 1943, & it is so tragic to see her looking like this, She is one of the most futuristically beautiful & individual classics, of her time, & so richly deserves to be loved & cared for, for the future generations, so I really hope some dedicated appropriate person, takes her under his wing, & returns her to her former glory, before it’s too late. — KEN R
