LAUNCH DAY MYSTERY – MANAIA
Another photo sent in by John Dawson – to some of the WW workboat group the answer to ’Name the boat’ is probably very easy. Not for me however – things that help –
• 1st three letters of the name are – MAN
• home port is shown as Whangarei
• lack of varnish suggests a workboat
• style suggests pilot boat• funnel may have the letters WHB on it > Whangarei Harbour Board
So what say the workboat brains trust
UPDATE – Thanks to several woodys we have confirmation that the vessel is Manaia – Designed by AJ Collings and built at the P. Los yard in 1963, for the Northland Harbour Board as a toilet boat. She is back in the Havelock Marina presently.
Looking in fine shape.
I was privileged to be on board for the delivery from Havelock to Whangārei after Adam Leydon purchased Manaia around six years ago.

Two M.A.G.S lads furthering their education off piste! I contacted Percy Vos and asked if I could attend the launching since I’d watched her being built all along -father had his boats wintered in the hardstand. I was privileged to sit alongside Harry Julian and got a lot of background to Manaia’s design and purpose.

MANAIA – I was there aged 15 and I took the photo.
Can’t argue with that then 🙂 Alan H

Launch day at Percy Vos yard. Great day! At least two of us Woody kids were there as well as all the Auckland workboat dignitaries. Happy daze.

Manaia, and she has more varnish than most woody afloat today, even when launched.
