Not All Woodys Are 30’+ And Coated In Varnish

Fast small woodys have been carving up the Waitemata Harbour for over 100 years. In the top photo ( ex Winkleman collection) we see the launch Eena in 1906 trying very hard to plane.
The colour photos are from Mondays 2020 Anniversary Regatta launch drag race, show Murray Deeble’s launch – Waikiore, doing the same 🙂

  1. WAIKIORE = WATER RAT in Maori is an excellent recent build “in the Spirit of Tradition”.ENA (not EENA) was built for Colonel White in 1908 and is a miniature MILKMAID, probably by Chas. Bailey Jr. She finished up in Onerahi.

  2. A big thanks to the crew of the Deodar for allowing us to surf their wake away from some much quicker launches, I wonder if they have any pics?
There is a little varnish -just enough to offend Cam 🙂

  3. Would these be two of the “Milkmaid” settlers’ launches which Harold has written about in this month’s Boating NZ magazine?
