Owen Woolley 45’ Launch – Aries
This Owen Woolley is currently on trademe but given the lack of photos of the exterior, you would have to wonder how serious the broker is in selling her 🙂
What we know is that she was built in 1957, is 45’ in length, with a beam of 14’ and draws 3’3”. The propulsion comes from twin Ford 120hp diesels, pushing her along at 8>10 knots.
Her 14’ beam makes her a very roomy old girl, so with some TLC you could have a very liveable woody to enjoy. But as always – best to get a survey. Broker comments she would make an excellent live aboard, which she would.
So woodys who can put name to her? Thanks to Mark McLaughlin we now know she is called Aries
Input from Harold Kidd – ARIES was built by Owen Woolley in 1957 for E.C. Carter and was originally fitted with twin Commer diesels of 105hp. By 1959 she was owned by W.A. (Max) Burnett of Arney Road, and by 1964 had twin 100hp 6 cylinder Chrysler Crowns of 1943 vintage.
I am a relative of the late EC Carter and can confirm that our family bought her from Bill Burrett – not the other way round.

I think Ken is right, Chryslers first, Commers second. Anything else would be illogical anyway. The APYMBA Register cards were not intended to be historical documents, so are pretty informal, and need to be treated with care.
Burnett was a typo.Cheers

The ARIES definitely originally had the 2 petrol Chrysler Crowns, & these were replaced some years later second owner by Max Burrett, — ( not Burnett, as noted by Harold above), — with the 2 x TS3 Commer Diesels, but from the outside one could hardly tell the difference, as the exhaust notes were remarkably similar — I don’t think the Chryslers had mufflers & were fairly loud, — (but a nice sound with the 2 of them, — just like EL CAPITAN, of Lake Rotoiti, has today,) — for petrol engines, & it would be very probably essential, that the TS3’s did need mufflers, with the end result, of a similar, quite distinctive, & fairly loud sound, when under way, from her 2 stern exhausts, which were totally just above the waterline towards the outer edges of each side of the tuck. — I knew the boat well in the Burrett era. The Burretts were in the building industry as I recall. -[- KEN R

Chris, it’s a bit of a puzzle. The APYMBA records in 1967 state that she was built by Owen Woolley for E.C.Carter in 1957 with the right dimensions and with the Commers. They also record Max Burrett as owning her in 1967, seeming to show that Burrett was second owner. The Squadron records show Burrett owning her from the 1958-9 season and Lloyd’s Yacht Register likewise. Perhaps there were two twin-engined ARIES of the same dimensions built by Woolley? Highly unlikely.
Woolley’s 1958 PROTEUS had twin Commers too.
Perhaps it was a clerical error in the APYMBA….entirely possible.
I’ll have another look at the original APYMBA card on the weekend. It’s up at Chateau Squalide at Te Hana.

Hi Harold You have said previously that Aries was built for Max Burrett and originally fitted with Chrysler Crowns, which I believe is the correct version Cheers
