Morning Star – There’s A Mullet Boat Hiding In There Somewhere
According to her trademe listing, Morning Star started life as a Logan 28ft Mullet boat yacht. The exact date of her build is unknown, but thought to be around 1910.
Hull of kauri carvel construction, the ‘new’ cabin are of marine ply.
Powered by Ford D-Series 120hp diesel, that pushes her along comfortably and economically at 8 knots @ 1200rpm. Currently moored at Kaipara Cruising Club Marina, Helensville.
Can anyone confirm the bloodline and add any info on her conversion to motorboat?
Harold Kidd Input – 28ft mullet boats were quite rare. The Logan 28 footer CORA is now sadly defunct. I suspect this one was the Crossley-built MERMAID or one of the several 28ft fishing boats built by people like Burgess at Judges Bay or Harvey & Lang.
BUT PLEASE may we refer to mullet boats as “mullet boats” or “mulletties” but not as “MULLETS”. According to people under 50 that I know, that term refers to a particular men’s hairstyle and was never used to debase mullet boats until recently and then only by ignorami. (done AH)

I owned the 28′ Mullet Boat pictured up until about 10years ago. It was moored then off the Strand in Tauranga. It was named Lone Star while I owned it. Previous owner told me it was built in 1924 or 1926.

Cora is definitely still sailing and looking marvelloud. I see her in the BOI every summer. I have some pix here somewhere

I can assure you that Logan Mullet boat Cora H3 is still sailing on the waters of the Bay of Islands, she was recently featured on the Offcenterharbor.com .
sadly the Logan Celox has gone, being wreaked on a trip from the BOI to the Cavalli Islands.

These make lovely launches,I had a 28footer (kathleen)converted to a launch.sold it to a guy in Auckland 36 years ago.i often wondered what happened to it.

The Bailey & Lowe 28 footer ALVA went to the Kaipara as a launch very early on, but I saw her at Rawene some years ago in front of a house on the left going down to the wharf.

In small craft, “topsides” are defined as the side of the hull between the gunwhale and the water.
Only in big ships (navy and merchant navy) are the above-deck superstructures referred to as topsides (corrected AH)
