THISTLE – Sailing Sunday

Last Sundays story on the scows on the Waitemata / Auckland Anniversary Regatta resulted in being sent the above photos of Thistle from the Tudor Collins collection at the Auckland Museum. Emailed to me by Ken Ricketts. The photos show Thistle at Kawau Island c.1940’s.

  1. That photo of Thistle at Kawau shows her coaling gaff rigged and two skips or tubs standing on the port side deck. She went off register in April 1939, machinery removed, mizzen mast and sails removed and used as a barge.Owned for many years by the Kasper bros. Lost on Motiti Island 1946.

  2. Jolie Brise, one of the all-time classics, M. Paumelle’s masterpiece, a founding ship of ocean racing! Absolutely marvellous!
And some teasing – wonder what was the schooner anchored in the middle of the sailing area, and what was the replica caravelle?
