As previous noted on ww Wairangi has been sold & is relocating to Auckland, Waiheke  Island I believe. Owen supplied this collection of photos from the passage from Picton to Auckland. Wairangi was designed by Wren Carey & built by Andy Miller of Miller & Tunnage fame. For a 1934 vessel of her design she is unusual in that she was launched as a pleasure vessel, which goes against her looks that scream ‘work boat’ converted to pleasure use. Wairangi was the opposite as she became a Lyttelton pilot boat c1948.

Currently doing some work on Wairangi at the moment and thought I would share some pics now the hull has been stripped back showing the planks in fantastic condition
She’s so well made and still in great nick. Great to work on ones like this.

  9. I spoke to Owen Foster earlier today (5.4.16.) WAIRANGI had just rounded Cape Colville after leaving Napier 47 hour earlier & expected to be in Oneroa where they will spend today & tonight. They had an excellent ride for almost all of the second & final leg of her Journey, to her new home in Matiatia, Waiheke Island.
    When they left Napier, they had a rolling ocean swell, but it had no break on it, & was very comfortable. During the first night, it got a little lumpy, so they slowed until that passed, & the rest of the journey, Owen reports was delightful.
    The 6L3 Gardner has run like a clock, (as they a always do), & has not missed a beat. They stopped at Hicks Bay, just this side of East Cape, for an hour and a half to check engine systems & otherwise have come straight through.

  10. WAIRANGI had a very rough 37 hour ride from Picton to Napier, owning to bad judgement call on the weather, by the then delivery voyage skipper, so they were very glad to arrive in Napier, Owen told me. — KEN R
