Mystery Launch
photo ex Peter Louglin ex papers past
Todays photo is from the NZ Herald 09-10-1928, appears to be a very manual process, note the tin of tallow on hand to grease the rails. Who can ID her?
One of the reasons I published this photo is that today a very similar motor boat, Pauline & Harold Kidd’s Bailey & Lowe – Romance II is re-launching after a refit at Marco Scuderi’s yard that has seen R2 returned to very close to her original configuration. Still a few last minute jobs to finish so unfortunately R2 will not be at Patio Bay this weekend. ww will feature R2 when complete.

You’re dead right about that remnant of laminated pine. It’s the sole surviving piece of Geoff Bagnall’s dodger that we removed. It just happened to be in the right place and the right dimensions and would have had to be replaced with new “proper” timber in identical form, so, after much soul-searching, we kept it. The Bagnall dodger would have lasted another 95 years but it was in the wrong place, too tall and long by miles and I found it difficult to get around with bionic articulation in shoulders and knee. The new dodger is a replica of the 1919 version (plus or minus a thirty-second or so).
I don’t know what the boat in the Herald pic is, but we’ll find out, won’t we chaps?

The apprentice was just a bit slow with the follow up coat of red lead / grey primer.
I love the low profile dodger.
Be nice to see some follow up photos of her out of the shed for an over all look.
Great, speedy job done!

I like the mix of timbers being used in Romance 2. That upright pole on the cockpit roof looks like laminated treated pine. Boatbuilders have always had to make the best job with the product at hand.

Would wonder if there isn’t an oops, sorry going on at St Marys Bay there! The body language seems evidence enough. Been there done that. Good on yer Romance, though!
