Got A Question, Looking For A Boat, Found Something Of Interest?

ww gets lots of correspondence that start off like this :

” I used to own _ _ _ _ _ in the the 1960’s, do you know where she is now”

” I wonder if you could help me trace my granddads boat”

So I have set up a Lost & Found post – if your looking for a boat just enter brief details in the comment section below & click the ‘post comment’ button. You click on this icon, top right (up turns blue when you scroll over it), to go straight to comments – the number indicates the number of comments.

Over on the right hand side of the site is a Lost & Found panel – if you click on that it will take you to this post.

You can also use the search box to see if there have been any info posted – just type the boat name into the box & hit enter.

GIVEN ITS THE COMMENTS SECTION – KEEP IT SHORT i.e. NO STORY TELLING

I’ll trial it for a while & see how it goes. Alan H

  1. Have had an enquiry from a past, but later owner, of Gordon Coles COLMANA, a 1974 34 foot Vindex he had built. The enquirer would like to know if she is still afloat, & where she is now.
An image is available on the post “GORDON COLE & HIS BOATS”

  4. Ken, that outfit was owned by Frank Hooks. The tug was “Kuri” still had the direct reversing “Fairbanks-Morse” engine.I think Frank bought her from war disposals after she came back from Fiji. Just can’t remember the barge’s name but she was a converted scow. Frank ran that rig single-handed grabbing sand and shingle for J.J.Craig doing 2 or 3 loads per week into their old Kings wharf yard.

  5. S-Class (16′) Free To Good Home

    Message from Marcus Boielle
Not sure if this will interest anyone but a friend of mine has just died and I have been asked to find a home for an old S-class 16 footer. She was wrecked in Okahu bay sometime in the 1980s
She spent many years in a dry shed so there is no rot. The stem is sprung as are the garboards and some damage to ribs but she is pretty much complete. I have been told that the sail number is “1” though I have not verified this. There is a plaque on the coachroof with L’Estrile on it. It has been under a tarp for the last 18 months. It looks to be a good subject for restoration.

  6. Hi

I came across your posting of 21st Oct. 2014 & have some information that maybe of some help.

I was brought up at Northcote Point from 1963 to 1985. I now live at Birkenhead Point, so have not travelled far.

The Stockley family lived at 110 Queen Street, Northcote Point.
Wally was a builder in the area with another boating family – The Aspens. (Aspen & Stockley Builders)
Gazelle use to be regularly pulled out of the water on a cradle / rail system at the bottom of their section.
At one stage, I remember he built a clear Perspex flying bridge on the cabin. The family use to go to Great Barrier Island every Xmas.

She was moored on a swing mooring in Little Shoal Bay.

Unfortunately I do not have any photos.

I hope this is of some help.

    Regards

  7. Most grateful for this information Harold, I’ve sourced a signed copy of the book in Christchurch. As the proud owner of GLENMORE the book will only add the historic value of such beautiful vessel. She is currently undergoing extensive work since a near drowning twelve months ago. With the help of Freddy Ochards family much of her history will be retained onboard, including the shipslog and Freds own memoirs of the early days as a child. She came across the Tasman in 2003, and it was love at first sight when I boarded her in 2009. I was lucky enough to purchase her six months ago, laying quite forlorn in Pittwater, Sydney. Totally rewired and painted she will be up and running again in full glory once the rebuilt Detroit is installed. Thank you again Harold, and to Alan for your help. What a great find to come across the woody website, keep up the great work

  8. GLENMORE is mentioned in “A Labyrinth of Waterways” by Frank Ponder. He says she was constructed by Swanson at Blackwood Bay from the bones of a 40 footer started by Isaac Harvey. The inference from the book is that she was launched more like 1946 than 1958
although no precise date is given. Her first owners were the Orchard Bros and Ken Gullery owned her when the book was written c1985.

The Greenwoods did repairs to her at the boat yard here. Perhaps some-one can enlighten us regarding her story?

  11. It was the 20 footer NGARO designed by Sinton & Fisher and built by Harvey & Lang as a cat-rigged mullet boat for H.S. White of Stanley Bay in 1911. Like NGARU (both schoolyard Maori for “cat”) the rig was soon replaced with a conventional gaff sloop rig. The Rev. Jasper Calder’s parishioners bought NGARO for him in 1926 and he used it to preach a sermon every Sunday, often at Drunken Bay. Later, of course, he moved up to the various launches named CRUSADER. Maurice Rice must have owned her well after WW2. I didn’t know he owned her; my memory of him is his penchant for fast cars!

My father was friendly with Jock Mccullam a Scottish boat builder who built a couple of small launches for my father
He also worked at Craft Construction and when Diane was launched she was berthed at Queens Wharf where she was finished. As a young boy I went for a ride around Wellington Harbour in her. Another Athol Burns design was also built there she was 40ft named Karatihi belonged to Jos Paul also went for a couple of rides in her does any one know where she is
she was twin screw and powered by a pair of Morris Commodore petrol engines later lived at Te Punga Lodge Marlborough Sounds which at that time was owned by Mr Paul and I understand she was repowered with 2 BMC Diesels when launched she was moored at the boat harbour on the outer wall.

  26. Looking for the 1908 Bailey & Lowe – Valerie

I have just found this blog, and wonder whether anybody has any information on the Bailey & Lowe launch built 1908 – called “Valerie” and purchased by 6 of us in 1965 from the Wanganui Harbour Board. She had been used to tow barges of metal on the river, so was very slow (5 knots) with a big slow-revving propeller. Having had a recent re-engine with a Ford 4-cylinder diesel, she was very reliable, but totally neglected. Our syndicate did not believe in spending money on her, used her for several years, tied up at the old town wharf next to the main city bridge. Had some amazing fun and adventures ( the river bar, and the training walls come to mind), but I think after I left town she was sold to a house demolition bloke Jurgens. Wonder where she is now? Any information appreciated! No, I am not a relative of the Bailey and Lowe bloke! Just interested.

  53. Warning, boring stuff from a lawyer follows.
As to privacy, WW is about boats, mainly launches (which have been the poor cousin of the Classic movement until WW sprang forth from Alan’s loins). It’s only about people insofar as they relate directly and pertinently to boats, not about their private lives and foibles unrelated to boats.
Pam, I should say that you are extremely unlikely to cause a problem because of your inherent kindness, courtesy and manners. But if there’s an invasion of privacy by some poster gossiping about people’s private lives, just for the gush of gossip and being smart arse, it brings down the wrath of the people affected (or mostly their fond descendants) and threatens the viability of WW.
As to intellectual property, here on WW there is a feast of images which could be accumulated by an individual and republished in some form or other in breach of the copyright of the posters and WW, as is clearly flagged by Alan. Some posters too have posted images provided to them by others, without acknowledgement, which is another form of upset.
It’s just a question of manners and the respect for other people’s privacy and intellectual property.
    End of rant.

  54. Alan was right to pick up on that word, COMMERCIAL.
There’s a minefield of privacy and intellectual property issues here in WW.
I do hope they don’t fester one day.
I’ve already had to placate two families utterly outraged by breach of privacy stuff that’s appeared here.
If you add to that the whiff of a possibility of COMMERCIAL breach of copyright in images, it becomes a worry.

She otherwise looks virtually original to me, The Millers by recall were a quiet English couple who led a fairly quiet boating life & kept mostly to themselves. — You never saw lots of boats rafted alongside or anything. –lovely people.

She was 28ftx26ft6insx9ftx2ft6ins and had a 100hp Osco Ford V8 petrol engine (Mercury 239 cu in). Miller shifted to live at 6 Bongard St Mission Bay about 1957 and sold her sometime after 1961. I am wondering if anyone can help me or point me in a direction to find any information re a 1958-9 36 foot displacement launch called ” Gazelle”. A friend is restoring this old classic and I’m trying to gleam any information I can about her.
She was built in Auckland during 1958-59, and was designed by Jim Young. She is a displacement launch, and was built for for a Wally Stockley of Northcote. She was the last of the 3 hulls built upright by Jim Young.
I am trying to find any history re previous owners, and the life of the launch until now.
Thank you for any help you can give me
    Cheers

  73. ALAN; thank you so very much for this wonderful addition of “LOST & FOUND,” to the site a brilliant idea, many thanks to you, & also to AUMOE for his great observance & retentive memory. I have spoken to the present owner last night & have now got 3 lovely pics of TEMPEST , which will allow me to complete the series of posts I have been working on for weeks, on the Norm Fairlie series of boats. — KEN R

  75. PS that foliate scroll-work on the bow is a dead giveaway that she’s Bailey & Lowe of the period 1911 to 1920 when it was highly fashionable.

  76. I’ve done this before for someone. ROYAL IRISH was a 32 footer built by Bailey & Lowe in August 1913 at their Sulphur Beach, Northcote, yard for H. C. Williamson of Cape Runaway. Her original engine was a 20/35hp Sterling. In the winter of 1914 she broke away from her exposed moorings and came ashore but was shipped back to Bailey & Lowe for repairs. Joe Addison of Waimana owned her for many years. In 1941 she broke down off the Rurima Islands, a little to the west of Whale Island, off Whakatane. Addison sent off carrier pigeons for help and was towed in by the PORT WHAKATANE. Addison sold to Charles Bell of Waimana who replaced the 3 cylinder Ailsa Craig then in her with a BMC Commodore diesel. Bell sold her to Barry Davies of Leigh c1975. The rest is recent history.

One that is very important to me to find quickly, is a pic of a 30 foot Mc Geady launch built for Norm Fairlie in 1964 called TEMPEST –Nome F had her built specifically for the World Game Fishing contest held in NZ in 1964 & sold her shortly afterwards He was fishing for the Kawau Game Fishing Club — he never took a pic of her, & I urgently need a pic, to complete a set of proposed posts for this site. If anybody by chance has one I would really appreciate it if they could please, send it to Alan or me at kenpat@ihug.co.nz — KEN RICKETTS

  82. Another one — does anyone know where to find, or have any pics of, the early 36-38 foot Mc Geady bridgedecker, built as LADY SUNSHINE, for Tucker Bros., the owners of Sunshine Food Products Khyber Pass (Sunshine jellies etc.), & sold to the Com Hardley family, — (Hardleys Plumbing Supplies Morrow St Newmarket — c1946, who changed her name to VARLENE, & which was later owned by my old friend, H T Morton for a number of years in the late 1940s & 50s — ( Varlene Tce,. Mairangi Bay was developed by HT& family & named after their boat), — & I think she may have been owned by Fred Hildich after the GULF STAR in the1980s
Hope someone can fill the gaps, & send some pics., — have great hopes with Harold. — KEN RICKETTS

  83. Entirely agree with the top line of your comments, she definitely lacked in visual aesthetics, & by what you have now said, the “5” cylinder Hudson would follow through. — Sounded awful out the exhaust that’s why I enquired at the time as to engine details. — KEN R

  84. the 32 footer SUNRAY was built by Harvey & Lang for themselves in early 1914. In 1915 they installed that American sedan-type top. Ernie Harvey sold her to shipsmith Tom Inglis (I mowed his sisters’ lawns) in 1916 and he installed a hot Buffalo for racing . When H O Wiles got the Stearns agency, Tom installed one of those high-performance engines. He died during WW2 and I don’t know what happened to SUNRAY after that. Her APYMBA number, 45, was taken up by the Couldrey WAIRIKI after the war.

  85. As a teenager I regarded SUNDOWNER as a rather horrible vessel. She was built by R.J. “Pud” Dixon at Devonport and launched in 1940. Dixon used kauri from the railings of the old Takapuna Racing Club which was rather soft. She lived on a mooring off Torpedo Wharf and was registered as B28, later D8. I remember when she came ashore at Devonport in 1947 and later was stolen, finishing up on the rocks at Orakei. I think my woodwork teacher at Devonport School, Jim Gibson (GLEAM, AOREWA) had a hand in her construction. Jack used to keep discipline in the classroom by firing inch by inch cubes of wood at the offenders.
According to Ian Hill, not so long ago, SUNDOWNER still exists “up harbour”.
I am intrigued at the massive technical challenges involved in removing one cylinder from a Hudson car engine.

  87. I would like to know more about a 2 masted motor sailer/yacht called SUNDOWNER, seen frequently in Schoolhouse Bay, in the mid & late 1940s.
Willie Smith of LADY ELWIN, had an association with her, c1946.
She was fairly large, around 50′ with a centre bridge, not similar to, but in the concept of NEREIDES, MANAWANUI, & even had a flying bridge & an unusual wine barrel shaped stern.
She had a “5” cylinder Hudson car engine, ‘cut’ down from a 6. KEN RICKETTS

  88. Does anyone know what happened to the SUNRAY– as seen in the RH corner of the recent post WWII pic of Mansion House Bay – she is next to the LADY SANDRA. Circa 34-36 feet long featuring in that pic., a unique bridgedeck styling, similar to that of a early 1930s American sedan car roof & rear window concept, with a tiny oblong rear window, & the cabin top rounded & flowing in to the coamings with no dividing line of the beginning & end of each. she originally had a bus top ( tram top) of the early mid 30s & was probably built at that time . She was very fast, & had a dainty little flared bow, with no portholes, & a medium height deck line, higher than the earlier classic Logan & Bailey era. I saw her frequently at Kawau between 1946 & 1951 but have never set eyes on her since. — Love it if someone could fill in some gaps — KEN RICKETTS

  89. Triesta. 33ft bridge-deck built about the early 60’s as I was told by the previous owner.

I bought her in 2000 from Trevor Managh at Sandspit and he had her for about 4yrs. The Lindaurs of Russel BOI [oyster farm owners] also had her for approx 4yrs but not sure when. I have a coastguard Certificate of Seaworthiness issued to a R.G. Hillary dated 1 July 1967. She was also based at Waiheke at some stage, apparantly, but not when or who owned her.
I would love to know her build date and who built/designed her along with any other history.

    Thanks Kelvin Petrie
