Mothers Day

ALCESTIS

Today is all about mums, past & present + families. What better photo to remind us about family life than the one above taken during the Guthrie family 1931/2 Xmas / NY Northland cruise on their launch Alcestis.
Over the next few days I will post some stunning photos of Alcestis (now Raiona), Lady Margaret & Shenandoah cruising around the far north.
Enjoy today.

special thanks to Graham Guthrie for sharing his grandparents photos

  1. I have just managed to get, courtesy of my devoted classic boat minded daughter, a good clear enlargement of the L.M. part of the pics above, & unfortunately, having now closely scrutinised them, with good clear magnification, we heve determined that at that stage of her life, she was still absolutely original, (outside at least)..

  2. What a wondeful contribution the Guthrie family are making to our boating history archives,, & sharing all their wonderful photos & writings with us all. Thank you so very much.
You have just added to me own studies on “LADY MARGARET NUMBER ONE” which all who have read the story on this site, or CYA Forum, will know,
The original pics. of her, taken in late 1920s had the origninal bridgdedeck, which was striaght up & down at the front, with doors, on to the forward deck, & no dodger, but in the 1931 pic at Hururu Falls she has the slanting bridgdeck & dodger, that she still has today, which means they were done by original owner H O Wiles, before this pic was taken.. It’s amazing how we all help each other without even rrealizing it.
