Waitangi - the motor launch

Waitangi, the motor launch was built by Bailey & Lowe as Karamana in late 1923 to a design by Hacker and originally had a Green 6 cylinder aero engine. As you can see from the photo she was one of the ‘quicks’.

Photo as Karamana below – read H Kidd reply for details

  1. She was built as KARAMANA for F.B. Cadman in 1923 by Bailey & Lowe to a design by Hacker. KARAMANA = CADMAN in pig maori.
She was later bought by Auckland Grammar School teacher P A S Stein and rebuilt as per the top pic. She was fitted with a war surplus 6 cyl Green sohc aero engine producing 120-140bhp, bore 5.5 ins, stroke 6 ins (you work out the capacity). Alan has some images of her as KARAMANA which I’d be obliged if he could post. She was pretty radical, a far cry from her current weird configuration.

  3. The movie is on a D.V.D.now.Done about 15 yrs ago when we managed to get a copy. The photos are taken on my childhood Brownie and can be reproduced to look better. My daughter has my Albums and I will get them back. She is an art director and cherishes the old stuff so they are safe. There will be more than one.If you give me your postal address I will get it sorted and send them to you.The film is a movie done by locals of Arran Bay and i have the names of some of the “Actors” It involves smugglers and maidens in distress. The Waitangi features as the main vessel and there are clinker dinghies etc. I have not watched for some years so will update myself soon.

  4. Waitangi was owned by Peter Stein who was a maths teacher at Auckland Grammar. Known as PAS Stein. He owned a house at Arran Bay Waiheke which is still in the Family. His son another Peter lives in Rotorua area. Thats probably Rotoroa in the background. I have a movie of this vessel playing around Arran Bay and the coast up to Hooks Bay.Entitled “Beautifull Waiheke” She was used as transport from Herne Bay to their Waiheke house for many years. The film would be made about 1930.We knew her in 50’s to late 60’s and I have a picture of her in those days too.
