VENTURE – New Owner & Trip To The Beauty Parlour

VENTURE – New Owner & Trip To The Beauty Parlour

Earlier in the month Jeff Norris reached out to introduce himself as the new owner of the launch – VENTURE, built by Morrie Palmer c.1964.

Her specs are 36’ x 12’11” x 3’7” and powered by a 90hp Lees Ford diesel engine.

Back in March we had a peek down below – link here – lots of photos. https://waitematawoodys.com/2024/03/14/venture-a-peek-down-below/

When I took my launch back to ‘bare wood’ a few years ago I was paranoid about getting too close to the kauri and scorching the surface, seems Jeff didn’t share my view 🙂 The finished repaint looks ace – we done.

  1. Chris McMullen commented on a previous WW story that during the first few years of this apprenticeship to boat builder Morrie Palmer at 15 Clarence St Devonport, he worked under Morrie and Cal Crooks. As Chris said back then boat building was a competitive cut throat business. At the Devonport yard at least five major builds took place Cara Mia, Lady Ethel, Venture, Oranoa and the Stewart 34 Phoenician. All that, along with repair and insurance work all done, by three people (average) in just over two and a half years. Most owners finished their boat off but Oranoa was the exception and largely complete and later launched from Devonport wharf c.1962/63.

Oranoa was built for the Lineham family and as of 2015, was still owned by the same family.

Verture was built by Morrie Palmer. A Billy Rogers design for sure. The owner Boatbuilder , ex Billy Rogers apprentice finished the build him self

Venture was supplied as a planked up hull only with no floors

  3. She is looking lovely & for one special moment as I looked down the images, I thought the dodger was going to be varnished, but sadly it is white again. Perhaps if someone bought the new owner a pot of varnish, he may use it???

Ther has been references to McGeady about this boat, in the various posts on her, as she has some similarities to some McGeady boats. Supreme Craft ( McGeady & Hipkins), & S.C. did in fact, build both a VENTURE & a SCEPTRE, but they were different boats. — KEN R
