CLASSIC WOODEN LAUNCH – TEINA

Yesterday we ran a ‘mystery’ photo of TEINA at Kawau Island, the winner of the name the boat quiz was – John Dawson.

As promised today we get a photo bomb of images of TEINA, all from her original owners – the McLeod family via the Heritage collection at the Auckland Library. Thanks to Nathan Herbert for the heads up re the photos.

TEINA was designed by Glad Bailey and built by Ted & Ray (maybe Roy) McLeod at Bayswater, Auckland and launched in Feb1922.

She was kauri planked and when launched powered by a 90hp Detroit 351diesel engine.

For a woody classic launch that was photographed as often as TEINA was its amazing that she has only popped up on WW once before. She was one of the boats photographed by John Bullivant on a tour of the Tamaki River back in Feb 2019. Photo below.

Would be nice to learn more about the period between 1960 and now + an update on her present location and condition.

  2. During the McLeod stewardship TEINA was kept at Bayswater just off the wharf, which was logical, since they lived just up the road.

She was also moored almost alongside the THETIS (KAROMA), in the 1940s at least, when as THETIS, she was owned by Ron Grant, & which looked visually like a slightly smaller sister ship. — KEN R

  3. I was aboard her a number of times during the 1946-50 period when the 2 McLeod brothers still owned her, & I believe the original engine was almost certainly a Twigg. — KEN R (edited AH)

  4. I bought from Milford and she had a 3 cylinder Detroit diesel the years I had her. She lived at Gulf harbour for most of the time.

  5. There was never a 3-51 series GM only 2 and 4 cylinder. and were introduced in 1950. Maybe it was a 53 series. certainly not an original engine in 1922 when “Tiena” was built

  6. She was in Milford in the 80s I am guessing about then. She had the GM in her then and her owner was Kerry Reilly
