KAWAU ISLAND – The Hauraki Gulf Woody Mecca
Recently I was sent the above photos the trial goes like this – sent in by Ken Fyfe via Ruth Thomson from Jim Tatterfield.
The top one is tagged Squadron Weekend and the 2nd one Lady Gay, but I can not spot LG in the photo – both photos are ‘located’ at Mansion House Bay, Kawau Island.
Rather a lot of familiar woodys gathered in those photos.
Below the top photo is another from Jim Tatterfield of Little Jim (A16) in full flight. A looker when launched and still is today. The bottom photo of LJ is ex Mahurangi Regatta a couple of years ago.

Margaret B is down in Tauranga now at Suphur Point Marina. A youngg guy has done loads of wok on her including recaulking, engine out, shaft work etc. Coming together nicely.

In the second photo there appears to be a yacht lying at an angle as if it has perched itself on the bricks at the entrance behind Lady Gay.

Top image top left also Juliana, centre is Aronui(Now called Aranui?), big one is Lady Crossley, ahead of her Iorana. Lower image all are obvious with extras including Apache, Lady Claire, Marguerite, Reremoana

The top image is very 1950ish as I can identify at least 17 boats that could only be there altogether in that era.
Starting from the inner end at the far side of the bay, to the near side, they are;
LADY SANDRA, SUNRAY, ROTUI, WINSOME II, MENAI & MARGARETS S next row MARO, TAUFALI, next row, TIROMOANA, TAWHIRI, LADY EILEEN, LILLIAN A, KALUA, next row LINDA, NAVY H.D.M.L., to the right of the HDML, at the far side of the bay is the HAUNUI & finally at the far right to of the image, is the LADY GAY The others are either too bow on, to identify, or I don’t know, or can’t recall them. — KEN R

LADY GAY is the launch furthest out fairly close to the shore at the western point of Mansion House Bay.
