Crescent

CRESCENT

Back in Feb 2018 WW was contacted by Ted Bosch concerning the vessel – Crescent , Ted was just about to commence building a 1:20 scale model of Crescent. Back in 1998 Ted had help restore her and the model was going to be ‘as remembered’ as no plans existed. At the time the WW story generated a lot of chat in the comments section and we uncovered a lot of intel on her past.

While some thought the double-ender had Miller & Tunnage lineage, turned out she was actually ‘designed’ and built by three M&T employees, no doubt there was a mix of DNA going on.

These days Crescent calls Tauranga home and is being very well cared for – if her owner or anyone local knows the boat can they send in a photo/s.

Ted recently advised that the model was complete and sent in the above photos – quite impressive.

  1. Hi,
The boat builder’s actual name is David Campbell MacLean. His widow is Nola and I’m the infant (age 51). Dad sold Crescent in about 1976. Absolutely excellent model, I let Mum know.

  2. Forgot to mention that Crescent originally had her deck at gunwhale level, with bulwarks all round and a deck-house for’ard of the wheel house. Don’t know when she acquired the raised fore deck, but it must have made her interior much roomier.

  3. From John Gander: in addition to Dave McLean, Arthur Watson was the other builder involved, Arthur was Foreman at the Roger Carey yard when I started in 1963

  4. Very nice photos, thank you, John. When i rebuilt Crescent in1988, good kauri was not available [used treated island kauri] and would have liked to have varnished the wheel house and teak decking, but my client good not afford this. I took liberty with my model .

  5. Marvellous! My old friend Buster Bartlett used to make models that sometimes looked better than the actual boats they were based on. This one is in the same vein – certainly Crescent never had that varnished finish. Well Done!!
As to Crescent’s genesis, I don’t know the names of her other two builders, but the principal one was Dave McLean, who was her owner, and brought her North to Waikawa when he became foreman at Jorgensens. He lived aboard for several years, acquiring a wife (Nola) and infant.
Crescent’s galley boasted a full sized Aga coal range – no need for central heating 🙂
