Mystery Havelock Marina Launch
One of the boats that Dean Wright photographed at Havelock Marina back in October 2022, is pictured above – to date we have not been able to ID her.
Obviously has the sounds boat look i.e. could take just about anything over the bow and still pop up.
The size of the dry stack exhaust at the rear of the pilot house suggests a rather large zoom zoom down below.
Can any of the southern woodys put a name and more details to her?

Hi My father Max Greig owned 36 foot launch Norwind in the 60’s -70’s moored at Westhaven.
I wondered if anyone knew where she is now ???
She was painted when he bought her, but he stripped all the paint off, and restored her back to the original Kauri.
We had lots of lovely family hoiidays.
Where can I upload a photo of her please?
Thankyou and I love seeing the photos of all the old boats !

Powered by a 6cyl GM, built as a whale chaser it’s name was “Kingston” it was a late arrival to that scene and was never used as such. It spent many years in the Marlborough Sounds as the Havelock (Dr Jacobsen’s) mobile surgery/office. It was extensively modified around the turn of the century for Mahar “Blue” Derry, of jet boating fame and used for pleasure.

Input from Tim Morrow
The mistery boat in the Havelock Marina is the Kingston , she was once a whale chaser from Norfolk Island.
Dr Jacobson used her for a number of years attending his patients in the Pelorus Sound maybe during the 70s and 80s . She was powered by a 2 stroke GM desiel engine .

And you are right about the “Zoom zoom”… when I lived in Havelock she had a 671 Detroit and the whole town knew when she was running.
Raised coaming and cabin has been added since those days

When I first started boating in the Pelorus in the 60s, you could hear Kingston coming well before you saw her, with a distinctive high pitched sound. We were told she had an ex WWII fighter aircraft engine in her. She is still very quick. A few years ago, I met the current owner in Havelock and he had just come back from a circumnavigation of D’Urville Island – in one day! That is some serious miles; imagine how much that would cost in diesel today. Evan Walker TARANUI Havelock
