DORIS
While mooching around the Whangarei docks yesterday I spotted Doris. Had a brief chat with her owner who hopefully is going to email in what he knows about her past. She made a brief appearance on WW back in late Feb 2019. At the time there was a lot of chat in the comments section as to her provenance and military (WW II) service. WW link here https://waitematawoodys.com/2019/02/27/dorris/
I walked away with two photos from her past, the 2nd one above from when her owner purchased her and the b/w one, possibly, from her time in the Pacific Island’s during WW II. The location is thought to be Vanuatu.
When I get more intel – hopefully we can confirm her bloodline and life journey 🙂
Harold Kidd Input – In case the subject of DORIS has become scrambled during the previous post, this DORIS (W66) was built by T M Lane & Sons at Kings Drive, Mechanics Bay in December 1910 for Fuller of Russell as a 36 footer with a 12hp 2 cylinder Scripps engine.
We Have A New Leader In the – Boat That Most Resembles A Block Of Flats – Competition – spotted off Waiheke Island last weekend.

the Doris built in 1916 for fullers towing the vehicle barge from opus to okiato was a different boat to the one pictured . Was known as the Doris and miss Doris. I owned the one pictured for 13 years. The Doris sunk up north over 20 years ago. Mr Blomfield from Russell Radio RIP knew both of the boats well.Doris was built from swamp heart kauri and was one of the first from Collins and Bell 1900. The sister ships were Theresa May and Alma Gee. They served in ww2 towing fuel barges for the Catalina’s in Fiji and the Solomon Islands. Is rumoured that the 3 boats started the Auckland anniversary regatta. When the 3 were comidered by the Navy Doris had a 2 cyclinder lister engine powering her and before returning it to its owners(a biscuit manufacturing company)was reporwed with a Gardener 4 LW and gearbox . I bought it through Allan Keane ( marina brokerage halfmoon bay)

That last boat would fall over if they put it in the water. – Dreadful in the extreme of extremes.
I agree it must surely be a Photoshop — KEN R

Just opened Dagwood’s post. I seriously doubt anything will turn up to compete with it.
