MYSTERY LAUNCH 24-03-2016

Another mystery launch from Robin’s collection of photos from the Whangarei Cruising Club Collection, as far as Robin knows, all are from the 1940’s early 1950’s & and were taken by Palmer Photography in Whangarei (1910-1999). Most by the late Graeme Palmer and possibly some older ones by his father.

So woodys who can ID this one?

  1. I asked Dad about Dick Hartley doing work on My Girl a while back after Jason raised the possibility but he advised that Dick did not do any work on her while my grandfather owned My Girl, from 1944 – 1948.

    I do see many Hartley touches in common between this vessel and Florence Dawn; side windows, navigation lights, mast, foredeck hatch, step from foredeck to side deck and associated bulwarks, beltings and transom shape.

    It is great to see a list of some of Dick’s vessels. It will be great to track them down.

  2. Sounds plausible. I knew Dick Hartley well many years ago but he was a fairly taciturn and private man. He was then at the top of his reputation as a designer of practical boats and I didn’t think to enquire about his early boats. I wish I had.
    Ian should have a better idea on your question.

  3. Harold and Ian G: This boat is very similar in theme to My Girl when Ian’s father owned her. Considering Hartley built Ians father’s Florence Dawn, might he have also built My Girl’s cabin and carried a progression of style to Lovely Lady?

    I am aware that Hartley had international influence, but the above is possible too..?

  6. She’s LOVELY LADY all right. Monty McHugh owned her, as STARDRIFT, around 1969 when she was used as a Coastguard Service cutter.

  8. She was featured in the post on 21.8.15, as STARDRIFT, the builder & designer was Hartley.

  9. I have since found about her is that she is definitely a Richard Hartley design
    A photo of her was used in his advert in 1952/53. I’ll get a pic posted

  11. I believe this vessel was once known as Stardrift and was owned by the late Bill Subritzky during the eraly 60’s

  13. She looks very much like the Hartley designed and built launch recently seen in Tryphena which was called Lovely Lady.
