photo & details ex Murray Willis

It is believed that Tainui started life as a Auckland Harbour Board work boat. Built in 1967 by according to her owner someone or thing called ‘BOSS’ ?
Her construction is 1×1/2” Kauri plank Carvel. She is round bilge and 38 ft long.

Tainui is moored next to Murray’s launch Marguerite in Whangaparapara at Great Barrier Island where she has spent the last 10 years. The current owner purchased her from a bloke in Plimmerton and sailed her up the east coast to the Great Barrier Island.
More details on her past would be appreciated.

Due to poor health she is for sale but not listed nor advertised any where, if you are interested, contact Murray at jan.murray@xtra.co.nz

  1. Dave Jackson tells us Tainui was built by Coulthard for the Marine Dept, the oyster inspectors boat – not totally sure but he thinks 1948-49. J Gladden made the alterations to the dodger.
Does anyone have a photo of her previous to the alterations to her cabin ?

  2. If Tainui was built in 1967, then Les Coulthard didn’t build her. In 1967 he was 78 and had been retired for many years.

  3. At my (Coulthard- Built) boat on the weekend I was told by the owner of Lynnmar, that there is a Coulthard boat at Gt. Barrier called Tainui that is semi- pilot style. I guess this is her? As ever, I’m keen on Coulthard info.

  4. She was owned for sometime in late 70’s & 80’s by Fraser Chapman of Thames, spend much time cruising with her from Te Kouma to Great Barrier etc. then she was powered by a 6LD Gardner steady 10knots .. Can take a heavy sea but rolled a bit.
