Lots of history on the Waitemata and Kaipara Harbours…

She was W68 when used By RNZAF at Hobsonville.

Photo & details from Andrew Pollard

Update & older photos from Zach Matich
A few Curlew pic’s first is her before the war, next is when she was sold to Cal Crooks
she is on the Kaipara Water Transport slip, last one is a newspaper shot so her towing sand barge ‘Wakarere’ for Kaipara Water Transport LTD, my dad Ron Matich is skipper and Ken Beattie is bargeman.
She was the back up tug for the ‘Lady-Kay’. Always had a obsession with her when I was young, she was sold well before I started as deckhand for the company.

  1. Just letting you know if you didn’t shes currently moored on the Tamaki river down by the Panmure basin on the poles just past their, still in pretty good condition but doesn’t get used a hell of a lot, like it probably use to. Harold the newest photo with green on her look exactly like she is now if that’s her.

  2. I sent Alan a pic of Nor’west and the story/info I was given.
Baden know the history of the Curlew.

  3. Zach, this boat always confuses me. She’s not the CURLEW built by Arthur Forrester at Whakapirau for Adams of Papaoa is she? That launch was later KUAKA/NOR’WEST. I have a pic of her on Forrester’s slip just prior to launching.
