MOANA
In the photos above we see the game launch – Moana under tow from the yacht Bounty, the photo is dated February 1965 and comes to us from the Tauranga Library collection via Dean Wright.
Moana is an unknown to WW so would love to learn more about her.
UPDATE – No Longer A Mystery – Ian McDonald has pointed out the previous WW stories on the launch – can not understand why the WW Search Box didn’t pick those up 🙂

A shame that the custodians currently in charge of the SS William C Daldy are considering the possibility of scrapping this very special historic and capable vessel. I dont suppose the NIMBY’s on the coastline overlooking the harbour complaining about her smoke stack emissions has anything to do with it ??. It does not surprise me, as a fully paid up and qualified person during the 2004/5 season I acted as skipper during a charter for a AM Cup match, with lots of other keen volunteers, to only be belittled by the FOGM on board, who promptly put the vessel’s stern on the beach whilst attempting to show me how to “do it correctly”, when we returned to Devonport. With such people in charge I can only hope for a better solution.

Please, if you really feel for the William C Daldy, will you send a letter to the Society, consider fronting up to the meeting at Devonport Yacht Club at 1100 on 29 October 2023. Just some kind words of encouragement even……

For a country that was built on its seafaring we are abysmal at saving our maritime heritage. Millions are poured into saving old buildings but for some reason there is very little funding for historic craft which in many cases have a bigger story to tell. As far as I can tell there is no official New Zealand Historic Ship register which many other countries do. I have been involved in historic ship preservation for some time starting back in the 1990’s on the historic coastal schooner MV Tuhoe at Kaiapoi and understand the issues in which the team trying to preserve the William C Daldy are facing. We were lucky with the Tuhoe that we had a bit of a support base and it was extremely heartbreaking when the Tuhoe had to be broken up following an accidental stranding at the Waimakariri river entrance in September 2015. Since 2015 NZ has lost many historic vessels, Scow Echo, Tuhoe, Te Aroha, the ferry Kestrel, the steam dredge Te Whaka and the steam crane Rapaki, far too many. The scrapping of William C Daldy if it goes ahead will be a absolute travesty. I am currently serving as Trustee with The Alwin G Heritage Trust we are now the owners of the scow Success which we saved in the nick of time before she was broken up, we have had her road transported to Kaiapoi from Nelson where we hope to restore her to her former glory but like all restorations no doubt we will have to deal with needless bureaucracy along the way.

I wonder if WW hasn’t misidentified which Moana the website is talking about. Surely it cannot be the beautiful Moana currently listed on Trademe as the condition of that vessel appears very sound and a credit to the owners. $145K is a lot to ask for a boat which your website reports is about to be scrapped.
J Duggan – maybe a visit to SpecSavers is over due 🙂 Did you actually read the story or just the headlines? Two different boats mentioned in the story. Alan H

I live abroad and everyone where I go USA . Asia. Japan. Etc all make comment to our harbor. Auckland is the gateway to New Zealand and Auckland / the government of the day should be stepping into preserve the William C Daldy. It’s is iconic to Auckland and New Zealand as much as the Earnslaw is to Queenstown. It’s rubbish cannot find people to man her . The knowledge is there and I am sure there people are willing to learn . In Europe such vessels with heritage the whole community is behind it . As a previous comment cannot go to the knacker yard . We lost the ferries . If we loose this then a sad day for Auckland and New Zealand . Stop looking at a spreadsheet and think the bigger picture for New Zealand’s gateway city and tourism .

2 quote on MOANA from a woodys post in January 21 2014
Harold Kidd Update
Ted Gilpin told me that she was built by Lane Motor Boat Co. for game fishing in at Mayor Island by Alan Hunter and that Peter Parsons had a hand in her design and construction.

I know this boat well it’s a Lane Motor Boat Co. built launch. Three were built for Fred Brake who lived 3 doors away from the LMB Co., this one Moana is 42′ the others were 40′ and 38’.

Think this MOANA was probably built in the 1950s, ( Sam Ford Built a MOANA as well, in the 1930s40s) ,is probably built by Lane Motor Boat, as it has similarities to & could be related to Fred Brake’s 2 boats, the SEAWAY & SEAWAY FAIR. — KEN R

I am appalled that William C Daldy is even possibly heading for the knackers yard…. this vessel is literally an icon of Auckland… what can be done?.. how much money is required to keep her in service, andmaitain her annually?.. Let’s atart by treating the infection.. money required.
