Manutere – Sailing Sunday

Manutere – Sailing Sunday

Another great photo shared with us by Dean Wright from the Tauranga Library archives.

We see the yacht – Manutere alongside a wharf, dated April 1964 and given the bridge in the background – has to be Tauranga.

Can anyone enlighten us more on the yacht (motorsailer?).

Short story today, waking up in the Waikato after a highly esteemed woodys 80th birthday party last night – great party, topped off with an All Black win 🙂

  1. Hi Alan,

Warwick’s father Jim Lucas (Gulf Harbour) owned Manutere for approx. 40 years.

We owned her for ten years after that.

She was a great family cruiser for our young family with many happy cruises up and down the coast.

We gave her a big birthday during our ownership with the help of Graham Johnson at Pine Harbour.

    Best regards,

    Shaun Connolly

    Hi Shaun

    Thanks for getting in touch.

As you will have seen from the emails I sent Graham, I spent a lot of time on Manutere from a young age into my 30’s.

A lot of time at Kawau (where the family has owned a bach for more than 60 years), Great Barrier, Poor Knights, local racing with the Weiti Boating Club around the gulf.

My brothers and older sister also spent a lot of time on the Manutere cruising with Dad. Mum wasn’t so keen although her and Dad did a lot of cruising together with us as babies on his previous yacht. As I mentioned to Graham, I was a newborn baby onboard Dad’s yacht prior to Manutere. Mum asked Dad to go ashore at Stockyard Bay on Kawau for fresh water for me and that is when they found the family bach and bought it.

I did countless days sanding down varnish, scraping the hull etc. She was a tough old girl and Dad’s second wife. I still remember one particular trip going home from Kawau to Whangaparaoa and going through Tiri passage against the tide (I was in my teens) – was a bloody rough day. Under full sail and a rogue wave following caught us on the rear quarter and dumped a few hundred litres on me as I had hold of the wheel. Flattened me to the floor.

Attached is a link to my Youtube channel with a video cut of 16mm footage Dad took of some of the days on Manutere. The other yacht is my Uncles from memory.

Attached is one of the few photos I have of myself on Manutere (at Kawau)

Graham mentioned you sold Manutere – any idea who owns her now and where she might be based ?

    Kind regards

  2. Hi Alan, If I read things correctly and in Kens defence he is talking about the original Matangi built to the Matangi design. Bill F is referring to Manurere being a Matangi design but has left out the word A in his opening line which confuses things. Cheers

  3. My recall & understanding is, that the original MATANGI, which was also called by that name, was built by & for Ted Cooper of Orakei with considerable assitence from his boatbuilder son John, with many more copies by or for others, to follow, after he sold the AWARUA. Can someone please correct me if I’m wrong. — KEN R

KR – again…….. read the other comments b4 you comment. Bill F had ID’ed the boat and supplied extensive details. Alan H

  4. Yes, she’s Matangi built and sailed by Charlie Hardman. Photo was taken alongside Tauranga Yacht Club, now Harbourside Restaurant, after the 100 mile Gold Cup race. Owners son John hosing down cabin top , Ross McNaughton aft and Charlie’s wife Lila cleaning up after the crew
