AVE GITANA – Workboat Wednesday
Bay of Islands woody – Dean Wright sent in the photo above of the ex workboat Ave Gitana, he snapped the photo on this phone as he was hauling out Artthusa for some TLC, as if it needs it 🙂 Any of the workboat gang able to enlighten us on her past?
Dean also sent in the photo below of the sport fisher – which he believes is possibly named – Erelyn. You would get fit climbing the stairs ………….. 😉

Hi Dan,
Sorry for the sluggish reply.
Yes, Jack Barrott was my grandfather – sadly we lost him in August 2010.
Someone who should know a fair bit about her is my uncle (Jack’s son) Noel Barrott who is still floating around Whangārei’s Town Basin with his long-suffering 😉 wife Litara.
Probably the easiest way to get hold of them is via Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/litara.barrott/ but let me know if that doesn’t work out.
Anyone interested in a “modern-day” classic wooden sailing yacht should check out their boat Sina – indeed something to behold… but I am probably a bit biased (naturally).

Kelly is your Grandfather (Jake Barrott) still alive. Robert Scott who is now the caretaker for Erelynn would dearly love to get more history/data/information on her. Cheers Dan Barnett

If the second boat is indeed Erelyn, it is the second boat my grandfather built. I believe the first was a small launch called Merlin, but that predates me by several decades. Then there was Erelyn. Named after my mother Erin and aunty Lynn (but goes by Robyn). Then came Callisto which this site has an article on (https://waitematawoodys.com/2022/01/10/the-origin-of-callisto/). Callisto is the boat I spent many a happy school holiday on leaning to fish and snorkel with my grandfather (Jake Barrott). I still grieve the sale of Callisto, but am glad to see she is still being cherished.

Erelyn was collectively owned many years ago by David Auld, Fred and Bill Gibson and Murray Darroch. Very fond memories of trips with my father on this beautiful launch. Nice to see a photo.

Yes the second photo is of Erelyn. Robert Scott is now the caretaker of her and has been for the last 5 years after taking over from his father John. The vessel has been in the Scott family caretakership for the last 25 years. She had a massive birthday 4 years ago when she was out of the water for 103 weeks. She still runs the Ford Dovers with Bowman heat exchangers. Out now for a bit of a rubdown and painting of the hull. I’m not sure if it was a coincidence but Caters and Opua store were both sold after she went back into the water after that 2 year birthday. I do know that the Pie, Filled rolls and beer sales in the area went down.
