Harrier – Our Biggest Woody

HARRIER
At 70’ Harrier would have to be the largest woody on the Waitemata Harbour. Built by Brin Wilson (year unknown) to a Sparkman & Stephens design, she has a 16’5” bean and draws 4’11”. Powered by twin Yanmar 165hp engines, I’m no engine guru but I would have expected bigger, but combine these engines with a 5,000L fuel capacity, this girl is set up for long haul cruising.
In her tme listing (thanks Ian McDonald) there is no mention of her performance.
You will observe from the photo gallery above, she is fitted out for just about any situation – but you will need a Lotto win to own her 😉

  1. I think Harrier was built in the late 70’s, pre Boat Tax, for Doug Bremner. Need to consult my old Sea Sprays to verify

  3. I think one of the Skeggs or Talleys owned Durville at one point.
    There is a picture of her with an oyster dredge gallow frame bolted onto her aft deck.
    All done for tax dodge no doubt.
    So shes had her stint as a dirty old dredger 🤣🤣🤣🤣

    Maybe if you include duckboard and spare man Which is bloody confusing but more and more done, why ????
    Durville as mentioned is bigger and way more superior than Harrier
    Durville is 73 feet and approx 60 tons
    Her hull is heart Kauri French Carvel on laminated frames
    She was built to Lloyd’s 100A1 at McMullen and Wing
    She was designed by Laurent Giles

  7. Harrier was originally going to have 2 x 6 cyl gardners.
    The yanmars in her have the exact same footprint as a 6lxb.
    They aren’t the typical sewing machine yanmars..

  9. Those Yanmars are Cummins 5.9l blocks with the marine bit by Yanmar, 165 hp for longevity
