MOERANGI
As mentioned I spent the long weekend at Whitianga & on Sunday afternoon went for a mooch around the marina. Only saw two woodys that interested me enough to get the camera out of the case – one being Moerangi. It’s always a challenge taking photos from the marina, but hopefully the above show enough of her to be able to identify her & uncover some of her history.
The photo below is solely for Baden Pascoes benefit – a wee bit of publicity for his extended families business 🙂

Hi,
She is NOT the ferry Moerangi from the south and 1900’s
Baden is more on track. I might be able to help – I need to ask Mum though.
My Dad bought Moerangi back in 1972/73. He finally sold it around 1992 or 93 – and I think that’s when it went to Whitianga.
She was kept on moorings in the Tamaki River, just before the old Panmure/Pakuranga bridge.
We were members of the PYBC and our boat was ‘famous’ for it’s little freezer – on the Club picnics, we always took the ice-blocks to dish out later.
We were out nearly every school holiday or whenever Dad could get away – always over the Christmas holidays. Usually we’d leave the Tamaki River, head over to the bottom of Waiheke, then over to the Great Merc’s for New Years – awesome parties back there in the day, then over to the Barrier (loved Smokehouse Bay with their wetback and the swing).
I found her in Whitianga a few years back – and wondered how 2 adults and 3 kids could live on her. Back then she didn’t have the bridge. Dad used to stand on the driving chair, steering with his foot, and his upper half out of the hatch.
Happy days

Jan, Archibald Weir’s MOERANGI was a quite different boat, a 55 footer built in 1902 by Logan Bros. She is still in existence in good shape.

Hi. If this is the same Moerangi which was the same ferry that was owned by my great grandfather Archibald Weir, I have a bit of information. http://www.plimsoll.org/resources/SCCLibraries/WreckReports2002/18467.asp?view=text

Moerangi belongs to my brother Mitch and his wife Phyl. Does any one know who built her?
