Woody On Tour
Ross Dawson sent in the above collection of woodys from the Havelock Marina. In Ross’s words he is “currently touring around the Mainland, and taking any opportunity (when Mrs Tourist is otherwise distracted) to mooch about marinas and wharves to take pics of ‘interesting’ wooden boats.”

Does anybody know what happened to the former Perano whale chaser that was at Waitai on Durville with the Vince and Bob Moleta in the 1970s ?
I think she was named Miss Waitai at that time.

The Northern Star was built by Roger Carey at Carey’s boat yard in Picton for my Father Jim Fishburn snr and was anchored in Dryden Bay Marlborough sounds

apart from the fact that the top of the name Valwyn is clearly visible in the second picture down…. so it doesn’t need too much rocket science to work that one out 🙂

Not much Cross-ref required, it’s nothing like Antares. Antares sits in a paddock by a river last time I saw

Have had another look at the partly visible McGeady, & also now cross referenced her with the VALWYN & have discovered it is definitely VALWYN & not ANTARES. — must be careful to look for more clues in future in cross referencing. — KEN R

Seagull wasn’t the first launch restored by Jack Shand. The little schooner beyond her is my old Kotiti, built by Peter Lamb in Christchurch. I think she’s still owned by Jim Wood.
Northern Star is indeed one of Roger Carey’s.
Balaena was later owned by the Redwoods of Forsyth Island – IIRC 🙂

Have cross referenced the McGeady now, & as ANTARES has a similar flying bridge & window styling & shapes in the coamings, I believe it is her. — KEN R

Alongside Northern Star is the much modified Tauranga, ex pilot boat built for the port of Tauranga in the late 50s by Robbs in Timaru.

In a recent series of articles in BOATING NZ I dealt with these hospital ship launches. MAHENO did go to Gallipoli; MARAMA was too late. The two launches on MAHENO were 1. AWHINA built in Auckland by Jas. Reid and donated by the NZ Power Boat Association and 2. VERONICA a Wellington-owned T.M. Lane & Sons launch donated by W.B. Featherston.
SEAGULL is among a scrum of others reputed to have been aboard either MAHENO and MARAMA and been under fire from the Turks…….. but not so.

Northern Star is a Roger Carey. The Jack Guard one is much bigger.

PS It is pretty likely that she was designed by Prof. R.J. Scott who was an engineering consultant to Andersons and did a good job designing the carburetters for their stationary and marine engines.

Of course, I’ve been in correspondence with the owner over the MAHENO involvement. I rang Andrew Anderson, of Anderson Engineering, about the boat. He confirmed that she was built at their factory which had skilled carpenters who were accustomed to producing large wooden butter churns for butter factories.
Must update my own database! She has spent the bulk of her life at Lyttelton or on the Estuary.

“Seagull” featured in the Havelock Slipway calendar in 2007 with the following details (presumably supplied by the owner at the time):
Built 1904 by Anderson’s Engineering, Lyttelton. Powered by Yanmar 3QFM diesel, cruises 7-8 knots. Served as tender to hospital ship “USS Maheno” at Gallipoli 1915. Saved from the hard by Jack Shand with extensive refit 1978-79.

I wonder if SALLY is the SALLY built for Blechynden pre 1909 and in the Nelson area in the years after that? If so she’s been highly modified. Maybe just another rename after wife/daughter/girlfriend?
There was a SEAGULL in Picton from 1904, owned by Mitchell. That pre-dates Ernie Lane in Picton, but Chas. Bailey Jr, Bailey & Lowe and Logan Bros all built many launches of the configuration for the Sounds at the time.

DELPHINUS was built by G J Wheeler in Auckland in 1987. NORTHERN STAR was built by Roger Carey at Picton in 1967. I thought BALAENA was built in 1913/14; built for Perano Bros by Ernie Lane with a 28hp Campbell engine. Pity Ross didn’t record the name on the boat whose image is second from top. Nice to see Gleniffer again. As for the other two, again pity no names, but they both look like Sounds-built craft.

I think Northern Star was built by Jack Guard for the Fishburns. Balaena is an early Perano chaser. Not to be mistaken for Gilbert Peranos later chaser also called Balaena.
