Waitemata Wakas – Sailing Sunday

Waitemata Wakas

Motoring back from the CYA Patio Bay Race weekend, with Barb & David Cooke aboard Trinidad we passed this impressive fleet of Wakas off North Head, Devonport. Seems they had assembled to get a visiting Waka that was doing (I think) a circumnavigation of the world. An impressive site & of particular interest to the Cookes as their son-in-law Greg Salthouse built them. Very talented & diverse yard is Salthouse’s.

ps big day today – its my birthday 🙂

  1. The Polynesian voyaging canoes are in town after sailing to Australia for a island representation at a recent climate change conference. Hokulea has voyaged from hawaii and is continuing on a circumnavigation. Each pacific island has its own voyaging canoe / voyaging society and master navigator(s), taught in the art of instrumentless ocean navigation/wayfinding by Mau Puilug, an open ocean fisherman from Micronesia who’s skills were passed down generation to generation And discovered by Hawaiian researchers in the late 70s. If anyone wants an enthralling read, pick up “hawaiiki rising” on Amazon or kindle. Puts your above average navigator or sextant user to shame and tells a great story in the process 🙂
