THE DAWN

photo & details from Riwia Fox

Have had a request from Riwia Fox on behalf of her aunt who is looking for any details on her fathers kauri launch – The Dawn. Excuse the very low res photo, hopefully a better one will be found. The war time ‘345’ number should help jog some memories. Riwia’s aunt believes it was built by Dick Lang in 1935.

Updated details (25/07/2014) from Riwia Fox – her Aunt has advised her fathers name was Bill Hogan, a member of the Ponsonby Cruising Club & The Dawn was built in 1935.

  2. That’s yet another DAWN which was built by Arch Logan (allegedly) for J C Spedding c1922 but bought by Dr. Stenhouse for game fishing at Mayor Island in 1932. She was a fast boat with a 40hp Scripps.

  3. My grandfather owned a small launch ‘Dawn’ around 1960 which was supposedly 26 ft – It was moored in Tauranga harbour – any idea of the tie up with this query?

  4. There were at least two DAWNs in Auckland pre-WW2. Both were entered in the 1911 Regatta, one owned (and presumably built) by Dick Lang and one owned by F H Archibald.
Hogan, of 3 Mission Place, Onehunga, advertised his DAWN for sale “at Panmure” in December 1945. She was a 26 footer. From the above image, I suspect his boat was the 1911 Lang boat, but with the clerestory and dodger added to her original flush deck, probably in 1935 from the tenor of her accompanying myth.

  5. There were lots of Dawns, including one built by Dick Lang c.1911. I need the name of Riwia’s aunt’s father for a positive ID.
