Harold Kidd Update
Alan Williams built BANSHEE for himself in 1966. She was built at a time when Williams was fighting the Takapuna City Council to remain in business with his existing use as a boatbuilder in Omana Road, a predominantly residential area. There were allegations at the hearing of noxious noise from “shipbuilding” on the site, with overtones of clanging steel and grinding, when he was in reality producing lovely wooden thoroughbreds like this.
I acted for the local residents and regretting taking that brief!
The Kaiaua boat is called Lady K (II?). I have a photo. Similar boat, but I highly doubt the same without some fundamental and hard-to-justify differences

Taratie Mai from Keith Turner as I remember.
She was built for Dick Reid of Takapuna, had a 6 cylinder Ford and was 26’6″ in length. Dick sold her to Bill Jobey who changed the name to Patty J and owned her for around 5 years. Last time I saw her she was laying at Kiara in a mud berth opposite the camp ground.
Banshee boats as I remember them being built:
Waitungaru 28′ 4 cyl Ford
Banshee 24′, later named Endora. Perkins
Banshee 32′, later Marahi. 6 cyl Ford
Banshee #2 34′, 6 cyl Ford
Alex J 32′
Lara 32′
Hope this is of interest.

Hi Harold, I am trying to track down details/history on a sister ship to Banshee that was built by Alan/Ron Williams for (I believe?) Dick Read, I also believe she was called ‘Taratie Mai’ named after his wife Dorothy May. Any information would be appreciated!

She is typical of one of Alan W’s favourite interior layout styles, with an “open plan” style as with the AOMA & JUANITA, both of which I have been on many times, & which have the same “open Plan” concept. — KEN RICKETTS

I met Alan Williams a number of times in that era, (the 1950s to early 70s) & knew him & the boat when she was new & there is not the slightest doubt that he built her for himself, & to the best of my recall, owned her for quite a period of time. Am unsure of how many, (if any), like her, he built later.
Lovely boat & in fantastrically original condition in the pics — she is just how I remember her when she was new .– Long may it continue. — KEN RICKETTS
