Tawera

TAWERA

Seeing we have a rather important yacht race (regatta) starting today, in vessels (AC72’s) that are light years way from what we call a yacht, I thought its about time I posted some photos of the rather beautiful 1935 Arch Logan ‘Tawera’. Seen here at the CYA 2012 Classic Yacht & Launch Exhibition. Somewhere I have some interior photos which I will post when I find them, in the mean time you’ll have to take my word that down below is as smart as the topsides, a little like the cigar bar at the New York Yacht Club.

  1. My father Alex Stuart owned an A class keeler named Tawera. He sailed her to Bali from NZ with my mother and one crew . Me and Dad sailed her back via Darwin,Thursday Island and inside the reef across to 3 Kings land fall in NZ. This was in 1977 . Amazing charging in Sou westerly gale for 3 days and couldn’t make sightings but he was a great navigator and good on the technique of “dead reckoning “

  2. Dear John,

My father, Bryan Simpson (now aged 89 years) also crewed on ‘Tawera’ at about the time to which you refer – he worked for the Herald & Weekly Times with Scotty Wilson (1950 – 1968).

    Best wishes,
