THE LEAST USED WORD ON WW
In the comments section on Friday Mr Steam – Russell Ward gave me an elbow re the absence of Vindex launches on WW. Well its simple – they are just too modern looking for a site that focusses on classic craft, most are made of plywood, & f/glass and most end up like the one above……….
Possibly the inspiration comes from terra firma………. (photo ex John Burland)

CAN YOU IMAGINE THE COMPLAINTS IF THIS 1964 WD40 ADVERTISEMENT APPEARED IN 2024 (oops it actually is)

I doubt if Jim Young would be inspired, if he saw the block of flats!!!!
There is at least one Vindex, (with 18 inches extra beam added, – 13ft up to 14ft.6), on Woodys, & that’s my 40 foot TIARRI, built for me, predominantly by Barry Jones & Rex Collings at Whangateau & Matakana between 1976-79, of 2 skins of tannnelised kauri & varnished sapele Mahogany coamings, with a full Totara Keel & twin Perkins V8s. Slept 10 & sit-down dinner for 16. — KEN R

Any boat can get a fuggly look on if it is added to. We have plenty of lovely woodies that have transmogrified into ogres -as Shrek said: “Onions have layers, ogres have layers.”
The first time we saw a Vindex (might even have been the name ship) was off Matiatia. We’d sheltered in there in Ngakiwa -not the place to shelter really and we did the inter dominion ploughing championship until we finally dug in.
Morning came and a goodly easterly off the entrance. A huge sea in the Motuihi Channel wind against the tide and we had to head it for a time to get a quiet patch to turn round for home.
We made light of it while mother white knuckled and said her prayers as she did at times like that. Swearing “Put me ashore -I’ll walk home!”
And the Vindex just stormed past riding flat at maybe 12 knots looking majestic. They gave a cheerful wave and waved their mugs of coffee while we rolled and heaved at 5 kn maybe. Mother waiting for a curler to share the cockpit with us (she was good Irish farming stick). The vindex was 32′ and we were 25′ -the extra length an advantage on our coast they say.
So, Feerless Leader, I’d take up the cudgels on behalf of one of Alan Williams’ finest. He was building in the Milford Creek boatshed for a time remember….. I’d welcome seeing a good original wooden Vindex in Woodys. Maybe a tupperware logan alongside…..
