Mahina

MAHINA
photos & details ex Russell Ward

Mahina is a William Garden (USA) design & was built in the early 1960’s, her wheelhouse is a later addition. She had an open steering position. She still retains the inside helm and  is still powered by a Gardner.
Russell has a suspicion she was launched as Konoihi, any able to confirm this ?

With yesterday being the end of the year it was perfect timing to hit the 1,500,000 views – thanks to everyone for following the blogsite. Cheers Alan H

Santa slipped a few one-off ww tee-shirts into some friends & family santa sacks. ‘Santa’ was a little concerned they might not have been well received but they have been spotted at Waiheke, London & Prague !! so santa must have got it right 😉

  1. Seaspray July 1963:

Konohi (Maori for eye) is a 42 ft. ocean going power boat built for his own use by Mr. Ray Hartley of Devonport.
She was designed by William Garden of America and carries some sail but the ratio is 80% power and 20% sail. Beam is 12 ft., draught 5 ft. 3 in., displacement 14 tons and she is powered by a Ruston diesel through a 2:1 reduction to a 29 * 24 prop. Maximum engine revs are 1,125 and she will cruise at about 1,000 rpm.
Konohi took six years to build, Mr.
Hartley really starting from scratch by selecting his own timber
    out of the
Coromandel Range. Planking is all full length kauri, 11 in. finished.
Arrangement below decks consist of a double cabin for’ard, a four berth cabin next, a spacious deck cabin and wheelhouse with the engine below, an open bridge, and an aft cabin containing the galley and dining table.
An unusual feature is the carving on each bow of an eye and decorative scroll work. This was an original design created specially for Konohi, and the carving was done in totara by
    Mr. Gibson senior,
father of the well known yachtsmen Bob and Jim Gibson.

  2. And a happy new year to all, and trust your anchors are holding well this morning wherever you may be, I dare say the model wearing the shirt probably deserves an award for putting up with ww these last few years😉
