Islington Bay, Rangitoto Island

Islington Bay, Rangitoto Island

photo ex Scott Taylor ex ‘Old Auckland’

Today’s photo shows a collection of craft anchored in a bay with a wharf & waterfront baches. The land does have a Rangitoto Island look to it but the baches appear too substantial for the island.

Who can ID the location & some of the boats?

  1. The dark stained building with the green roof, was the store there for many years– went in that store lots of times, & I think the little launch may have been on a mooring, & lived there. — Could have belonged to the store owner.

  2. I agree, it’s Izzy Bay in the 1950’s before the Council started laying waste the homes and baches as their leases ran out. Those are the Waitemata Sandstone cliffs of Motutapu in the background.

  3. Not Rocky Bay, I lived in the bay for 18 years.Boat club shed was longer, & there was no wharf with white railings, just a small jetty at the clubhouse.

  4. I don’t know the boats, but it is the little basin at the main wharf inn Islington Bay Rangitoto – I remember the ramp alongside the wharf & the green shed at the top of the ramp from my youth extremely well. At a guess I’d say 1950s era by the stele of the little launch & the plywood pram dinghies behind the boats — KEN R
