Margaret Anne

MARGARET ANNE

Todays post I think is rather neat on several fronts:

1. The owner of Margaret Anne took a very deep breath & made a decision to return Margaret Anne to her original configuration. That takes guts & deep pockets.
2. It amazes me that there are restorations taking place that are happening away from the eyes of the classic wooden boating community. We think we are well connected & then you open your email & up pops a Margaret Anne. Thats cool.
3. I know it sexist to point this out but what the hell – Margaret Anne is owned by a lady & she has done most of the work herself. Helena has a plan, she bought Margaret Anne in 2013 & what you see in the photos above was the 2014 part of the plan. Its what we call a rolling restoration – next step will be the interior & a re-wire.

Now some details – Margaret Anne was designed / built by Billy Rogers.  Helena spoke with Billy’s son Jeff who said he built her with his Dad Billy in 1956. She is a sister ship to Lady Diana & while not as high spec she is still made of top quality materials. Helena thinks she is the fourth owner, the last one, recently passed away & had owned her for 40 years. Margaret Anne is a wonderfully comfortable boat to cruise in – very roomy in the layout and with the galley aft, she does not suffer from the common launch fault – saloon cooking odors.

Any woodys able to add to the history of Margaret Anne ?

  2. Hi my father in law RoyCossill owned the Margaret Anne for 44 years before his death 5 years ago this month.
We love the restoration and would be keen to bring it back to our Family.
Helena if you could call me it would be greatly appreciated.

  4. Yes, sundowners and scrabble on the roof. The budget version boom tent makes it nice and cool on these hot afternoons.

  6. Thank everyone for such lovely support! I am much moved. I have to say that I could never have realised this vision without the amazing talent, deep knowledge and boundless enthusiasm of “Dr. Bob”, best known for his award winning paint work in the automotive industry, but currently working more in the marine industry of which he is most knowledgeable! His perfect guidance and my “brute force” came together in a whirlwind of activity in November during high winds and challenging conditions. Thank you Bob, you are one in a million!
To answer the power question: MA is powered by a 80hp Ford and purrs along at 8 kn at 1800 rpm, we burn 4liters per hour, I find it quite economical, because those “deep pockets” mention – simply don’t exist! After all, the Germans say: “your shroud has no pockets!”

  7. Yep, we are losing them apace alright. We who are left have to stay on and hold the fort. Over the years I have formed great memories of great boating men (some greater gentlemen than others) holding forth over gin, whiskey or rum in their cockpits, their saloons and wheelhouses if not their flying bridges. Could name the faces but you will know them.

  8. Back to Margaret Anne , chief some of us have been keeping an eye on her even if we didn’t tell you AH. And different strokes for different folks , Roy looked pretty good on that bridge for the last 40 odd years alas another of the old Okahu bay team gone, and we lost our leader last year the wonderful and witty Trevor Coubray a real kind and generous gentleman.

Slightly embarrassed to say that I took 90% of the photos in the calendar, including the cover photo. I have a few copies of the calendar, I’ll drop one off, I’m overdue for a visit.
    Cheers Alan

ps I have posted details on the calendars in the main body of ww

  10. I love this photo. It has been floating around on the internet.
Who took the photo? They deserve some recognition.
I’m not into yellow rain coats but this time it is just so fitting with the scenery. Romany is a delight!!! Good on the association for latching on to this.
Russell does she want an inch block under the boiler bearers to give the boiler a little rake aft do feel. ( I’m allowed to ask this ; )
There’s a steam meet comeing up on 14 th February in Warkworth town basin. A neat occasion to see steam waffle through the air over the river.

  13. You will be drinking the best single malt these days since you broke into the international modelling scene – the fee for appearing on the 2015 Calendar must have been enough to keep you in 21 yr old Laphroaig Islay Reserve for a few years 🙂

  14. Ahhh! At last I sense a move towards restoration, not to a hyper-glossy fibreglass clad, hi-tech, hi-gloss reincarnation of the original boat; but an appreciation of a re-iteration of the original ship herself. I’ll drink to that (actually I am already -it is a bar environment isn’t it, Alan?)

  15. Ken, whatever is powering her is absolutely mint, like new. Margaret Anne lives on the same marina as Lady Margaret and I have been watching her progress. One thing is for sure, the power-plant runs like new.

  18. Yep, full marks for that one. We used to see her so often in the ’60s. Looking good especially minus the frying bridge. Hope you kept it -could flog it off on TradeMe!

  19. I’ve known her & her sistership since new, & how absolutely wonderful to see her right back to her original fab beautiful original format, Nothing can replace the varnished coamings to give that final touch of character & beauty, which both boats had when new. — Perhaps we may now even see LADY DIANA as well, take the hint, & follow your great example one day. — Helena you have done a fantastic job — KEN RICKETTS
