Mystery Launch 05/01/15 (Westering)
photo ex Harold Kidd
OK woodys lets see how good you are at ID’ing the above launch. The 1st to correctly name her & builder gets a waitematawoodies t-shirt 🙂
T&C’s – only one name per reply, so Ken R. you cant list 20 boats e.g. its XXXX or possibly XXXXX, if not XXXXXX, I’m confident its XXXXX 🙂
More details – from a chat today between Harold Kidd & Bob Salthouse
Actually the full story goes like this; Wally Brebner came across Bob Salthouse and Keith Stick out on the water in their yachts around 1964. Over a convivial chat Wally floated the idea of getting himself a launch. Bob sketched out a 28 footer on the back of a cigarette packet but later drew it out properly at home, but stretched to 32ft, for which Wally was later very grateful. Wally got Vince McGeady to build the hull and cabintop and finished her off himself, fitting her with a 60hp 4 cylinder Ford diesel. Around 1987 Keith Stick pondered getting a launch. At that time WESTERING came up for sale. Bob contacted Wally and, after another chap’s option expired, bought her for himself and Keith, running her for some years.
Salthouse Bros built the design several times later and produced it in fibreglass.

As big bro pointed out i had a head start, time difference [the Cooks are currently 1 hour ahead of NZ, when Daylight saving ends we will be 2 hours ahead and 1 day behind, more like 50 years behind Ha! Ha!] As Walter is family and i only answered part of the question correctly can i suggest the prize be put again for a mystery vessel.
Only recently joined the site, very much appreciated.
Regards to all
Lindsay.

That’s exactly how Bob Salthouse put it.

That’ll make my bro smile! Lin lives in Rarotonga and if we play with the time difference I think it would make in our time 0721 tomorrow ( I think). Wally is our cousin, and is the last survivor of our / my generation of that branch of the Brebner clan.Thank you Harold for your input. That would account ( in my eyes)
for the McGeady look re the cabin profile

PS for my money, however, Lindsay should get the T shirt. He deserves it for getting up at 0521 this morning to reply!

I think that’s what Bob said. We were at school together and caught up a bit.
I have never quite got over my guilt at being chosen to represent Takapuna Grammar School in the Inter Secondary School Frostbite contest instead of Bob, who was weaned in Frosties. Bob would have won.

Hi !! Ken,
Not sure if Walter was a teacher he was a builder for some years.

the Panmure Bridge for many years.

I get the message Alan — lovely — it brought a smile to my face, & although guilty as charged on the “possibly” thing, I knew that was not an option with a mystery boat. —
Have seen the pic before & actually thought I had it, & had a frantic instant search in my own collection, (so I could win the T shirt — would love one of those, in white especially, if available), but alas it’s not there, so guess I’ve bummed out on the T shirt, but if you do it again will try harder next time. — KEN R

Lindsay,
Was Walter Brebner a school teacher at Manukau Intermediate School back in 1948-49? — If so he taught me woodwork at that school — KEN R
