Tide In / Tide Out
Following on from yesterdays post, these two photos are from Mary Guthrie’s collection & are most likely from the same day c.1935, we get a glimpse of the launch in yesterdays photo.
Its that classic scene everyone having a great time ashore then oops – where did the tide go 🙂
Certainly the Manukau Harbour, most likely Titirangi / French Bay area.
Any one able to ID the launch?

A few years ago I renewed my association with the Manukau as a volunteer skipper on the refitted JANE GIFFORD scow. Got to know the Waiuku River quite well

Now,this stirred the memory embers. In the 1950’s I was a member of the Sea Cadet unit T.S. ORPHEUS based at Avondale. Our “Sailing Quarters” was at French Bay where was kept our boats – R1, a 27ft Montague whaler, an 18ft pulling gig,a Zeddie, and a couple of 9ft dinghies. Our C.O.Lt Stallard lived at French Bay, and his 1st Lt was Sub Lt Ken Butland (TRITON). We usually had our sailing weekends based around an early afternoon tide. The senior boys were allowed to do “overnighters” to Cornwallis and I remember a memorable voyage to Waiuku. Sailing on the Manukau taught one valuable knowledge re tides and shallow water navigation. The unit later moved to Westhaven, at the old AMYC. Great years, great memories.
