MOUTERE
There is a kauri planked launch hauled out at what they call ‘House Boat Bay’ on Waiheke Island (Ostend). It has been under cover on the hard for one year and is perfectly dry. It has a 40hp marine-ised Ford diesel that was going the last time it was cranked over about 8 months ago. Hours of use are unknown. The boat was trucked from the Kaipara and then motored from the city to Waiheke about 7 years ago. It apparently belonged formerly to the Stables family on Kaipara. It was bought by the Waldens of Waiheke, who would now like her sold. Mary Christie and Steve Matatahi who live on the house boat Kukurei are helping to find a home for the Moutere and they have done some work on her – most of the ribs are now strengthened and/replaced and much of the inside paint has been removed as has the paint on outside hull.
The owners & Mary are only trying to recovering their costs so Moutere could be a very affordable classic project.

Also keen to know more about her – designer / builder. I hope Zach Matich is able to chip in re her Kaipara days.

Will do as soon as the weather clears a little didn’t wan’t to remove all of the tarp yet as she is nice and dry inside. A few more months with any luck and the fine weather should start to appear thanks for the chance to save a classic vessel Jason it will give me something to do over summer and I can get back to the ocean again.

Hi Bryan, nice to hear you’ve been over to have a look. Can you post some new photos? I’d be more than happy to try to assist. Cheers, Jason (previous owner)

I am the proud new owner of The Moutere, wen’t and had a look she need some work going to have to remove and replace the transom and some planking at the very least. Topside has been previously fiber glassed by someone so that’s not to bad but previous owners have replaced beams with pine and put ply on the sides and it looks like at some point someone cut the classic lines off her from each side of the cockpit which is a shame cause guess who is going to have to replace them. Any help or advice would be a bonus.

I acquired Moutere a few months ago around the time when the Ostend causeway was cleared of boats. I intend to refit her in “due course” without getting too carried away. Any additional information or contact details of previous owners/people who know something would be appreciated! I did get some info of Steve but there is lot more to find out. Cheers

In the Port Albert Museum Archives (now at Warkworth?) MOUTERE (as MOTERE) is recorded as having been owned by the Stables brothers on the Kaipara from 1925 to 1988 and by Alby Littin (a third cousin of mine through the Inger family, I think) in 2001. They have a photo of her on the Kaipara. That’s all I’ve got. I suggest following up through the Stables family if they’re still around.

All I can tell you at this stage is she was owned by Albie Littin of Port Albert prior to leaving the Kaipara.
