Nereides The Facts

Nereides The Facts

Lots of dock-side chat & speculation around the fate of the rather special 1926 B.J.L. Jukes launch Nereides.

Fact 1 – On Sunday  27th May she was involved in a ‘vessel hits submerged item’ incident
Fact 2 – She suffered damage to her port side, refer below photo
Fact 3 – She took on considerable water, refer above photos
Fact 4 – She did not sink
Fact 5 – With the help of Coast Guard she was pumped out & ‘beached’ overnight on Motuihe Island
Fact 6 – She was recovered the next day & is now on the hard at the marina while being assessed.

Her owner is confident she will return better than before. That will be hard as she was a 9/10 before this oops, as per photo below of her at Patio Bay.  🙂

Looking for a marina to rent ?

While Nereides is out (2>3 months) her 14m berth on A pier at Westhaven is available for rent. If interested contact    mark@thesweetshop.tv

  2. Hi Nicki
The Nereides featured in this post was built by B.J.L. Jukes in 1926. I’m sure someone will chip in with the location – but I suspect it was Wellington.
Please email me some photos of your bridgedecker, email address below.

  3. We have a 1952 bridge deck wooden cruiser with 1 sail built by norman wright/ygossi. She looks very much like this vessel, and is also called Nereides. Can anyone tell me who built this one and where.
    Thanks

  4. I was returning from the Barrier that day and heard the whole incident on VHF.
It is moments like these when you appreciate the response of other boaties and in particular our Coastguard, who responded proactively rapidly.
Great to read that this classic boat will return to the water.

  5. With a hole that size they did extremely well to salvage her as they did. Great work!

  6. Hi my Name is Martin Beeby.   I am the owner of the Shamrock (originaly Shamrock Leaf)   She was built by Bailie alnd Lowe and Lanched in 1915.   She was powered by a 25hp Sterling petrol engine and could reach speeds of 10 knots.   She was converted to Diesel in 1936.   She was built for Arch McCarthy who ran the ferry service from Waitakaruru to Thames until the Kopu Bridge was opened.   Arch then sold her to John Faulkner in 1925 where she worked as a ferry and Tug in Tauranga harbour towing barges from Motiti Island and Mayor Island.   She was sold in 1980 and went to Kawau Island where she did tug work towing log rafts and barges during the building of many osf the wharfes at Kawau Island.   With the tides permitting she would take the locals to Warkworth to do shopping etc.   She was then on sold and was charter fishing from Leigh to Great and Little Barrier Islands.   In 2000 she was purchased by Rod Bridge from Shamrock Charters and sailed to the Kaipara Harbour where she would spend the next six years doing charter fishing in the harbour and over the Kaipara bar.   It was 2000 when she was deregistered as a passenger ship and dropped the Leaf to become Shamrock.   She holds the record for being the oldest vessel in continuos commercial survey in NZ.   I purchased her in 2006 from Rod Bridge and sailed her back to Auckland where she now resides at Te Atatu.   She has competed in 3 Anniversary day Tug Boat Races and has not done to bad.   She is now powered by a 150hp Ford Dover her 4th engine after she had and Isuzu and a GM 4 /71.   Being her 99th year she just passed another survey for insurance purposes and she is still doing well.   If anyone has more information I would love to get it.   my wife Trish has done alot of work into her history but any further information would be gladly recieved..   Regards   Martin and Trish Beeby

  7. Motuhue??? 🙂

Hope she does come back as good as new. IMO she and Vagabond were Joe Jukes’ two best.
Looked at her myself 6 or 7 years ago. Think I made the right choice (for myself) in buying something else, but she’s definitely a beauty.
