ROTUI

A Chris Craft, built circa 1938, 32 -33 ft originally had a Ford V8 petrol engine which is sure to have been changed to a diesel by now, & belonged to Alec & Linda Walker who lived in Landscape Rd Mt Eden & owned Regal Fashions in Karangpape Rd. They were a lovely friendly couple & owned her until the mid 50s. After they sold her, she diappeared off the radar. Ken Ricketts would love to know what ‘so happened to her. If anyone can help email kenpat@ihug.co.nz

  1. I am married to the Walkers daughter I understood that whilst there was work done on Rotui during their ownership my Father in law never mentioned major changes to the superstructure. He had an arrangement with Roy Stedman whereby Roy could use her whenever they were not using her. In return Roy did the upkeep on her with the engine servicing etc. my father in laws responsibility. I know the Walkers were happy with the arrangement. Any alterations such as what is mentioned would have Roy directly involved, whom i think would have been aesthetically sensitive. We have done a large amount of coastal cruising on our boat out of Auckland and have always kept an eye out for Rotui to no avail. Is there any further updates after the early 80s. The engine during their ownership was a petrol Gray marine. Does anyone know who the original boat builder was.

  2. Not sure about the change in the superstructure but Rotui was owned by Ian and Glenis Kerr in the rely 80,s,and was powered by a 4 cylinder Ebro.

  3. She was named after a well-known racehorse of the time. Her first owner was Otho Lionel Fletcher of 1 Dunbar Ave Mt Eden, a coal merchant. He died in 1941 so I imagine the Walkers bought her after WW2. In 1938, when Fletcher had her, the superstructure was a clean-lined sedan, with a simple dodger aft but without all those awful excrescences shown in the pic above. She must have been totally rebuilt above the deckline by the Walkers.
