WHAKARI
Was owned in the 1930s by the Cashmore family (the Late Wally Cashmore). In 2014 she is still owned by the Cashmore family (his eldest son Gordon Cashmore).
The b/w photo above was taken by Ken Ricketts in 1948, Ken also took the hauled out photos at Gulf Harbour in March 2014. An amazing deed given the time frame involved.

I bumped on to Gordon Cashmore whom I’ve known since I was 12, in 1948, & haven’t seen for many years, down at Ripples Café at Gulf harbour at lunchtime today, where WHAKARI is presently on the hardstand, & he has given me an excellent update & correction (in part) of her history.
He tell me that it was Garth Lane’s father who actually was responsible for her present coamings, which (except for the flying bridge, which was done by Gordon himself much later,) were done mid later 1930s — (perhaps it was Garths father who also built LADY PAT with the similarities of design.
Anyway he also told me she has had 7 engines since new in 1925, in total, which started with a twin cylinder Twigg, replaced by a Wisconcin, then by 6 cyl Graymarine in the1940s — (Gordon tells me he still has the instrument panel for this engine at home), — followed by one or 2 Ford Diesels & she has had a Perkins 6-354 for the last 30 years – he cannot recall the 7th one. — KEN RICKETTS

I used to mow Wallace Cashmores lawns in 1947-48 (a huge lawn, on a big corner site,) & recall well going down to Hobson Bay, with Owen & Gordon, to help load up the boat, ready for a cruise, on a number of occasions, at the dingy lockers, (now removed) — the “good old days”?? — I later worked for Owen as an electrician in the early 60s on his house in Ronaki Rd Mission Bay — KEN RICKETTS

She had a 62hp Wisconsin between at least 1944 and 1962. Of course Gray may well have used a Wisconsin block for this range of engine and they would appear similar. Owen Cashmore told me that she was rebuilt from the Sam Ford workboat into a bridgedecker by Lane Motor Boat Co. Obviously someone had another go at her subsequently by adding another storey.

I believe the Cashmore family have owned Whakari since the 1930s, initally owned by the late Mr Wallace Cashmore of Ngapipi Rd Orakei, & has now passed through the generations to his son, Mr Gordon Cashmore & Whakari now lives in the Wade River. My recall is that she had a Graymarine in the 30s to 50s & later a 6cyl Ford diesel, which she still has today. I took the B & W pic in Mansion House Bay Christmas 1948 — KEN RICKETTS
