SEEMS OSH / SAFE BOATING REGS DO NOT APPLY TO CLASSIC CRAFT
The top photo comes to us ex a post on the ‘Wanganui Historic Time Line’ fb – we see the stern wheel steamer – MANUWAI on a day excursion on the Wanganui River. The vessel was operated by AC Hatrick & Co. and believe it or not ‘licensed’ to carry 400 people…………..
Fast forward to 2025 and some plonkers are still doing it, see below………..

Alan you really should not have told those innocent yachtsmen that Rangi was about to blow, agreed in Wanganui it has always been AC Hatrick

Hi there
Happy Anzac Day
Lest we forget.
I think you will find that the paddle steamers working on the Whanganui River were run by Hatrick and Co. Alexander Hstrick was the Mayor of Whanganui in 1900 and for a few years after. The company ran several boats up the river for tourists and mail to the settlers. Thousand of people took the trip from Whanganui to Pipiriki then overland on Cob and Co coach through Raetihi then on to Tokaanu, on the south bank of Lake Taupo.
From there they would have traversed the lake on Thomas (Darby) Ryan’s steamier to Taupo. Thomas, along with Frank Worsley are two of the greatest New Zealanders that have ever lived. It is well worth learning about their lives. They weren’t connected though as far as I’m aware.
