Mystery Yacht – Sailing Sunday
photos ex Shamus Fairhall
Today’s post is total mystery to myself & Shamus, all Shamus knows is that a friend asked him to scan the photographs – I’m sure one of the rag & rope woodys will be able to at least ID the class of yacht, if not the actual name.

31′ according to owner. Dont know if she wwould be as old as 1912, as ribs where sighted were not too bad, no doubling. I own Parimar btw. Reading thru all the posts on various boats, it is amazing how many I have sold or tried to sell over the years I have been in brokerage

I still can’t figure out that name but she’s clearly an early 24-26ft (maybe even a 22ft) mullet boat with an open cockpit in the early style. She has a canvas cockpit cover in place in the pic at anchor.
I have been trying to match the name to the number but both are badly pixillated because of the low res scan. Any chance of a scan at, say, 800+ dpi? Or just a name of the family involved?
My suggested candidates are the 24 footers MARU and GLADY.

Is she 29-30ft? If so she could well be the GRYPHON built by T.M. Lane & Sons for E Gittos in 1912, much modified, of course.

Does anybody know of an old bridgedecker called Gryphon..purportedly a 1957 Shipbuilders, but has straight stem, single planked. Owner trying to sell says built 1957 in Wei, but I doubt it very much

No, it won’t be RATA. When I get a moment I’ll go through the names of the contemporary 24s and 26s and match the writing.

The name on the bow looks like Rata.

PS Shamus’ friend must have a family connection and an owner’s name? That will pinpoint her.

She’s a 24ft or 26ft mullet boat. The sailing pic was taken some time between 1914 and 1922 because she’s wearing the 1914-issue sail number. Pity I can’t read either the name or the number. It ain’t MUTU though. No such boat and that’s an end to it! (probably shouldn’t pun in maori…)

Olivine – you posted your comment in the photo section, not the main post. I have added it here. Alan H
