Milford Creek Needs A Bridge - yeah right

MILFORD CREEK aka WAIRAU COVE BRIDGE

There has been a lot of chat lately about the need to provide pedestrian access across the creek, in the old days there was a bridge, a very tall bridge. It did the trick, but these days a bridge needs to accommodate two mobility scooters side by side & be accessible by the blind. The options that have been tabled are a joke, all we need is another tall bridge. If you are on your scooter or blind or both, I suggest you use the existing footpath, a little longer but a lot safer than any bridge, even a modern one.

The photos in this ww post are from the Milford Cruising Club historical archives & show the area in the good old days. To find out more about the club visit http://www.milfordcruising.co.nz

  1. Hi
waitematawoodys can not do that. you need to scroll over the ‘FOLLOWING’ tab at the top left of the page, when you scroll over it, it will say “UNFOLLOW’, click the UNFOLLOW & you will log out under your existing e-mail address. Now repeat the process i.e. scroll over the ‘FOLLOW’ tab etc etc – then enter the ‘new’ email address.

  2. Well said, Alan Those agitating for a new low bridge just want a short walk to the beach, rather than a picturesque one alongside the marina and boat yard, the NS city only had to build a walkway on the sea side of the Inga road bridge and a boardwalk above the grass (a proposal all were in favour of) to keep everyone happy. Instead they have squandered 1.8Million of ratepayers money already on consultants etc . And furthermore propose a swinging bridge that will require dredging for a holding pier, constant maintenance and running expenses of ?? p.a. Hopefully the supercity will realise the folly of building a one off (in NZ) bridge of this type not to mention the hazard to navigation it will surely provide, luckily those pushing this barrow are dying off — or have concentrated on National politics now with Winston!

  3. Great stuff, Alan! I played in a polite jazz group at the Pirate Shippe restaurant shortly before it was demolished, one of the most idiotic things that ever happened because it seemed to be a very sound structure. I guess it was no longer economic once the swimming pool closed and the Daimler (5cyl Gardner) excursion buses no longer brought loads of Aucklanders in summer weekends and the young people got addicted to Rock ‘n Roll.
