JOHN STREET RIP – sad to learn of the passing last week of John Street- one of the leading visionaries and supporters of New Zealand’s maritime scene. There wasn’t many boating activities that John had not rubbed up against.

A sad day for the NZ boating community with John Street gone , he was the one who stood up to Muldoon against the boat tax that set our industry back for some years , latterly personally saving a number of our classic fleet for future generations to enjoy . There are not many who have worked in the industry longer than I and I was proud to call him a friend.

The tōtara in the great forest of Tāne has fallen: John Street has left us, the happy memories will remain: Others will speak of his life and achievements more fluently than I. I’ll share one:
I was first secretary of the Tug Wm C Daldy Society when we first got her from the AHB 45 + years back. Money was scarce and we were due to dock her at Philomel for a shave and survey and paint. A letter arrived in the mail with Foster’s letterhead. John sent us best wishes in a lovely letter opening an account with a $1000 credit and a cheque for $1000.
It dosn’t sound like much now, but back then it was a lot and a godsend. I never let him forget it. Farewell old friend.

And Merry Christmas to you
Having lucked into your wonderful site earlier this year I have enjoyed every daily bulletin – and bought the conversation starting shirt!
Magic Fiddler’s clinker built lines stand out for me but every day brings new interest and current and historical riches.
Long may you continue and all the best again
