SALOME

Owned by CYA member Ward House (MV La Rosa) between 1957 – 61. She was Wards first boat & according to Ward was 26′ & built by Joe Slattery. Ward purchased Salome from Fred Rothery (market gardener from Mangere) and sold it a Mr Fred Knapper (engineer from Chelsea Sugar Works). When Ward owned her she had an Austin 35 marine engine.

Very nice lines, but that goes without saying if she is a Slattery.

  1. Hi my name is Colin Rothery I’m the youngest son of Fred Rothery. Wards dad and my dad were old friends from school days. My dad brought Salome in the late 1940s for tender from the NZ Navy she had been badly damaged, speaking with my brother (this is before my time) she was trucked to our farm in Mangere and was reribbed and had a many of her planks replaced, over the time my dad owned here she was powered first with a Rugby engine then a hot big bore Dodge that had been in a hydroplane and was something like 120hp, I remember my dad talking about being in a race at Weymouth when this motor was fitted with a race appointed women driver that wouldn’t keep the throttle open, they didn’t win, he wasn’t impressed, the last motor was a new Austin Skipper Marine. Over these years she was in the Manukau, first in the Pukaki Creek behind the Airport then a Cornwallis beach were my dad had brought a bach.

  2. I’m almost certain she was built by Joe Slattery for George Smith of Onehunga in late 1921.
Smith owned her and used her for cruising and racing on the Manukau until at least 1929.
