A Classic Sailing Dinghy

7’6″ – Selway Fisher Redshank Clinker Stem Dinghy

CYA member Alan Good (MV Lucille) has been busy over the last 12 months delivering this little beauty into the world.

Alan started the project at The NZ Traditional Boatbuilding school & then moved her home for the final fit out. Still a few more tasks on the list in regard to the sailing rig. I will update this post with some sailing photos when available.

The mix of timber is amazing – Kauri, Jarra, Dumari, American Ash, Kwila, Hoop pine, Kavalu, Hoduras Mahogany, Kahikatea, Yellow oak.

Well done Alan, I look forward to seeing her in a bay 🙂 AH

  1. Thanks, Murray. I do have Ian’s book and have found it helpful. What I would like to find, however, is some more specific information regarding the building of the Redshank dinghy.

  2. For clinker ply I doubt whether anyone does better than Ian Oughtred for shape of finished product or clear instructions.

  3. I’m a yank and perhaps a little dense, but I just received my selway-fisher Redshank dinghy plans and with all the changes from 8 planks to six planks, stitch and glue vs. clinker ply vs. strip planking, no instructions but some cobbled together reprints of the generic process, I’m lost and disappointed. Maybe I’ve been spoiled by the plans of previous dinghies I’ve built. I want to build this redshank lapstrake ply but there seem to be no spec’s re lap widths, plank dimensions, etc. I would appreciate it loads if someone help me with this.
