Classic Wooden Boats on the Broads

Mooching around the wooden boat on-line world I recently came a across a small group of woodys in the UK that host a fb group titled ‘Classic Wooden Boats on the Broads’. Its a private group so you have to request membership.They are very active posters and have great content.

A recent story by member Nick Rainbird feature the boat yard – Abbey Boat Builders and restored (rebuilt) 1932 Broads cabin cruiser – Queen of Light. She was designed and built by Herbert Woods of Potter Heigham, Norfolk, in answer to, back then, the growing demand for luxury inland waterway hire craft.

Wonderfully to see these craft being given a second life and even better that Queen of Light will be going into charter on the Broads.

And surprize surprize no CYA Tui’s billboard today – hopefully some good news tomorrow and maybe an email later today 😉

  1. I holidayed on that boat as a young teenager in the sixties. Loved her and still do.

Great to see a nice old Broads Cruiser being brought back to such a high standard.I hope there are more around being saved like that.l did a boatbuilding apprenticeship in the late 60’s early 70’s with Jenners of Thorpe and Hearts Cruiser’s on the Norfolk Broard’s at their yard in Thorpe St Andrew and then went on and worked for Herbert Woods in Wroxham for a year before heading off for my OE in a Kombi Van.Many happy memories growing up in Norwich and boating on the Norfolk Broards.

  3. Great to see one of Herberts groundbreaking big boats being restored with its low wash hull, drop down cockpit top and rudder to allow quick turning, yesterday finished reading the story of his life written by his daughter Jennifer who lived in NZ since the mid 70s.

  4. What an amazing restoration. I have also spent time on these “narrow boats” along the English canals – best holiday ever – always something to do with locks / bridges and then there are the English country pubs – for lunch and dinner

  5. I lived on one like this at Tovil Boatyard Maidstone UK in the 70s
    Had two Perkins , we took her up the Medway and round to the Thames
    It’s a very relaxing way to travel and the locks keep you fit
