WHY YOU SHOULD HOLD OFF PAYING YOUR CLASSIC YACHT ASSOCIATION SUBSCRIPTION
I apologise to the non CYA member readers – but read on, this effects all classic wooden boat enthusiasts.
Last night was the NZ Classic Yacht Association AGM, I tabled in advance the following agenda item – “a request for a report on the status of the expanded CYA classic vessel ‘marina / dock’ that is planned for the Auckland Viaduct basin area”
What I hoped to hear was the CYA were developing a new permanent marina for upwards of 40 classic wooden boats that will be the permanent home of classic boating, showcasing to the Auckland public and tourists the CYA’s diverse classic wooden boat fleet.
I was disappointed with the reply and walked away seriously concerned that this new marina was only targeting “large, gaff rigged yachts, built pre WW II, NZ designed and built, and presented in display condition”. I asked how this ‘selection criteria’ met the CYA’s constitutional description of eligible CYA vessels e.g. ‘New Zealand or foreign designed yachts, launches, dinghies, boats, vessels of all sizes, description, ages, whether powered by wind, steam, combustion or otherwise’. The answer was there could be exceptions, when asked if launches would be allocated equal space alongside yachts, there was no lucid answer.
Well woodys it is just all too loose and I raise this topic because over the last 10+ years a lot of good people have worked very hard to make the CYA a more inclusive, welcoming place for all people with a passion and interest in the classic boating movement, regardless of whether you own a classic yacht, launch or even a dinghy. This development convenes our constitution and introduces segregation into our association, and most importantly denies the public the opportunity to experience the true breadth of the New Zealand classic boating movement. This new marina should be the front window for everything that the CYA has worked towards these last 25 years, not just a classic racing yacht marina.
So my question today is – are you comfortable with this policy of segregation? Personally, I think it has a bad smell to it and have a suggestion – how about holding back renewing your 2021/22 membership subscription until this policy is reviewed by the new / incoming 2021/22 committee – I will be

One thing that hasn’t changed I see, is criticism of the ‘Register organisers. When I used to put it together with others, I received actual hate mail. The worst offenders for it were those who just expect that their boats would be automatically added because they are well known(A- class yachts mostly). We used to send 5 or 6 reminders, some of them personalised. And yes, I could see when the emails had been read so the ‘spam filter’ excuse didn’t cut it ;). I gave up on accuracy of dates and designers/builders as it was easier to put up with an incorrect entry than the vitriol I received for my efforts.
Well done to anyone who puts their hand up to help with it- I know how much time it takes.

I DONT THINK PROTESTING WILL DO ANY GOOD AT ALL. I WAS TAUGHT AT A YOUNG AGE THAT IF YOU WANT SOMETHING, GO AND ASK FOR IT. GET THREE WISE MEN TOGETHER, MAKE AN APPOINTMENT WITH PANUKU TOP BRASS AND SHOW THEM PHOTOS OF NEW ZEALANDS FINEST CLASSIC LAUNCHES, INVITE THEM TO COME ALONG TO THE NEXT CLASSIC EVENT AND SHOW THEM WHAT CLASSIC BOATING IS ALL ABOUT. MANY OF THE STAFF AT PANUKU PROBABLY HAVE NOT BEEN ON A BOAT OVER 7 METERS.. THEN ASK THEM TO ALLOCATE 30 MARINAS AT HERITAGE LANDING TO CLASSIC LAUNCHES OF VARIOUS LENGTHS.. A LARGE PERCENTAGE OF THESE BOATS HAVE MAORI NAMES WHICH SUGGESTS THE PAST OWNERS WERE PROUD OF NZ. HERITAGE. PERHAPS BREAK AWAY FROM THE CYA AND FORM A CLASSIC LAUNCH ASSN. C.L.A. Better yet give the Viaduct back to the Black boat and Workboat fleet fill it with tugs, barges, crane barges salt of the earth good bastards.

The idea of Launches, Steam boats and Mullets etc being excluded from this new Heritage area sounds awful and boring but doesn’t surprise me. Time a few people grew up and accepted that Classic boats mean vessels without rags too.
It definitely doesn’t sound inclusive and also contravenes the CYA constitution as Alan pointed out.

When I first started the Launch Register as an experiment about 10 years ago, it was done for identifying boats across the bay and inviting yourself over for a beer. The following year, the yachts wanted to be involved which we did which was a lot of extra work. .. but we did it in the interest of being inclusive. Alan helped by getting the ads organised and it was a big success. .. BUT… we had to beg for a yacht person to sub edit the names and listings… a couple of years of registers went out un edited in the yacht area as I gave up asking. I did 6 publications over that time for free later assisted in the editing by Alan.. most years it was a mission to get any serious help from the yachts.
There was a clear them and us in the air then and it’s disappointing that the rag and stickies haven’t learnt that the growth area in membership is launches. I tried, Alan tried…
I hear the new register in the interests of being inclusive is all vessels all mixed up… good luck finding someone on the other side of the bay!

It seems a real pity to push dissension between owners of classic boats in Auckland: the Tui ad on you regular posts grates with me. I own a pretty modest classic woody – a yacht I’m afraid (Valeta, designed by Col Wild and built in Panmure by Owen Woolley, circa 1952). I bought her for not much about 20 years ago. I am a member of the CYA, and intend to pay my subs. I don’t have much to do with them, but approve of the movement, as I approve of this site (though I’ve been struck with just how rarely one sees a yacht on Waitemata Woodies!) Per the late Rodney King “I just want to say – you know – can we all get along? Can we, can we get along?”

A salty old sea dog commented to me at a funeral today that the CYA should set up a kiwi division of the UK based OGA (Old Gaffers Association) which was set up to preserve the distinctive traditional rig. But when I got home and searched it on the computer there is a problem, the OGA “welcome all types of boats and their owners as long as they share an enthusiasm for traditional rigs” 🙂

Having seen a number of classic boat displays overseas including USA, Australia and England it is the VARIETY of craft being displayed that has been the attraction. Case in point is the Tasmanian wooden Boat Festival where the range of vessels covers wooden yachts, launches, dinghies, fishing vessels, square riggers, models etc. As an owner of a wooden yacht I am drawn to all types of wooden craft on display ,NOT JUST YACHTS and thus firmly believe that to attract visitors to Auckland’s proposed display, a range of wooden craft is required and of varying ages thus highlighting the variety and influence of local designers we have produced in NZ.

Just got off the telephone speaking to someone who knows someone – and the comment was that the past cya committee was very divided on this issue, but rather than speak up, went with the flow. They understand the leash will be exchanged for a choker chain on the sub-committee driving this policy. Fingers crossed the incoming cya committee
(1) Have a broader view of what a classic craft is
(2) Have a voice and use it

My 50 buks a week worth.
A) there should be a selection of gaff yachts on berths. They are extremely good eye candy regardless of being a yotty or not.
B) there should be the mullet boat fleet as they originally operated from viaduct in old viaduct days and are raced still.
C) Some work boats that have done and or still do contribute to the building of what we have with viaduct/ westhaven/ harbour bridge etc. Maybe one day the Toroa will even get her feet wet and can end up there. Or if a miracle happens the Kestral could be re salvaged from her current incarnation and be turned into something?
D) some charter boats should operate from there (affordable ones) not the long stem and bubbles type). They can take people out to c the harbour.
I don’t personally see what public interest there would be in a bunch of private launches berthed there ? What story or history could a sign board say for a 1960ish built gulf cruiser ?
Can take a walk to any marina in nz and c the likes of them.

Marina cost?, it is around $75 a month at the existing heritage landing, I was told the new marina would be be around $100 a month, not bad for a 16m+ berth.
Cant believe they are shooting themselves in the foot on this – yachts only, thats a backward step. I’m a yachtie but so many of my sailing buddies have gone over to the dark side, I’d be tossed overboard if I voted to support this policy.

Disappointing but not surprised. CYA certainly hasnt earned themselves many brownie points in the last few seasons and this latest “thing” just makes matters worse. Quite sad really.

Perhaps you should have asked if the the decision made by the CYA or Panuku Development? You should be aware Panuku has more power than any political party.

I’m curious on two things.
1. Who exactly does this new asset to the CYA serve?
2. Given discussion stated that “it became clear that Panuku expected the berth to contain NZ designed and built, Pre-ww2 yachts, preferably gaffers”. Is the broader association privy to this communication and statement of intent?

The words I kept hearing last night on repeat were gaffers, pre WW2 and NZ Designed and Built. So you can see where the presenter is headed….. just picking up on the NZ designed bit, I guess Ranger, korara, any NZ built wooden dragon, Grey seal, Happy Days, Maroro any boat copied from Rudder magazine etc. The shortsightedness and lack of vision of this proposal blows me away.
