ALMANA
A wee bit of a mystery boat today, the above photo of Almana was sent in by Gwenyth Herbert via Nathan Herbert.
Very keen to learn who designed/ built her & where she is today? Extra points if you can name the other launch 😉
Input from Harold Kidd – She was built in 1940 by Cliff Roberts and Alder (don’t know which Alder). According to AYMBA records subsequent owners included P.H. Power, J K Robson, J H Buchanan, R M & G W Best (who thought she was built by Sam Ford), D Farmer and A C Hailey. There is a possibility there were either two ALMANAs or some of these owners didn’t notify AYMBA of change of ownership.
In 2013 she was for sale with a 1972 Perkins 65hp diesel.
Update 16-05-2019 photo below of Almana moored in the Whau River just past Te Atatu Boating Club. (photo ex Jason Prew, via Nathan Herbert)
And as a bonus today – some sailing porn – the photo below of the S&S Dorade was sent in by David Glen, taken at Hamilton Island Yacht Week. Dorade was recently voted by the UK ‘Classic Boat’ magazine as one of the 10 restorations that changed the world i.e. created movements & changed lives.
David commented on the photo “Great pic of the legendary one in anger”.
03-06-2019 Input from Nathan Herbert & photos ex Jason Prew – Shes now attached to what I think is a Harbourmaster mooring at Northcote point. Somebody needs to save her.
22-08-2019 Update. Steve Cranch sent in the photos below, sadly it looks like Almana is greater closer and closer to the land fill…………… 😦

I’m thinking how nice she’d look on a mooring up here in Mangonui. Must stop thinking . . .

Almana used to keep some pretty flash company back in the day. Pop knew the shepherd on Wanganui Island off Coromandel, and we anchored there for a week. The island was owned by the Spencer family, who would visit in the majestic Valhalla.

Almana was owned by my grandfather Alf Hailey of Sandringham, Auckland, in the late 60s early 70s, and she was moored at Okahu Bay. I have wonderful memories of exploring the Hauraki Gulf with Pop on this vessel. I can still smell the varnish and diesel. Thanks for the blast from the past! Love to know where she is now.

Unsure where it’s taken, but it’s Pacific at the end, maybe late 60s 1970ish?

Looks like the photo was taken from the Kawau Island Yacht Club wharf looking across to Kidds Cove.
The other launch in the photo could be Lady Margaret

To Alan and his Woodies, A lovely shot of the legendary yawl Dorade, the vessel that in 1929 began the stellar design career and rich legacy of Olin Stephens of Sparkman and Stephens fame. Some 20 years ago, I had the great pleasure of inviting Olin Stephens while he was in Auckland on business to view my 1:25 scale model of Dorade. Somewhat modestly, I presented the model to him whereupon , with hands behind his back, he leant over towards it, glanced back and forth, up and down, and after a little while turned to me, smiled, and quietly said.` mmm, not bad’. Praise indeed. I was, and remain, thrilled. regards Bruce .

The other boat Is the PACIFIC. The ALMANA looks rather earlier 1930s “Sam Fordish” in the bow — refer JULIANA .
