Aroha

AROHA
photo ex Robert Brooke

Another photo from the Jack Brooke collection. Son Robert thinks the location is North Harbour, Kawau Island, but not positive.

What do we know about Aroha ?

Input from Harold Kidd

I have always thought that this image was at Lidgards’ property at Shark Bay in Bon Accord. The launch is the 23’9″ x 6’3″ AROHA owned by T H Scandrett of Mullet Point about this time. She was built about 1907 in Auckland but I can’t tell you who built her. She had a 4hp Standard marine engine and reverse gear.

  1. It is a lovely photo indeed. I believe it could be Rabbit island in the background and would agree with Harold that it is from the Lidgard beach frontage at Shark Bay.

The rock outcrop in the foreground is very different from today and would not be sure of a building that size in that position. It is a long time ago however.

It is not North Harbour. The rock formation in front of Camp Bentzen is quite different and there was never a building like this at Camp Bentzen.

  4. I am not convinced this is North Cove as the land forms are slightly wrong unless taken from hard in about where the Camp Bentzen wharf starts.

  5. Lovely peaceful scene. The billy the lady is holding would have been a milk billy. My father was a dairy farmer in Torbay and each morning after milking he delivered the proceeds from big milk cans off the back of a small van (and if the van broke down which it often did the horse and cart came into use) to the locals who left their billies at their front gate ready for him to fill up. OSH, health authorities and the like weren’t in existence then! Oh boy, I’m showing my age here!
There was a milking dairy on Kawau of which the brick remains can still be seen on one of the walking tracks. So I would assume this group had purchased from whoever milked the cows.

  6. I agree with North harbour Kawau, as location, — know that island like the back of my hand & would agree that it’s almost certainly Rabbit Island in the background — KEN R

  7. Gorgeous!
What uniform is the little boy in and where is his hat?
The title girl is so naturally kicking her bare foot out in the water oblivious to the camera man.
The billy and that divine little boat, I’m melting here. She’s looking sooo much like Janice, Russell- John Sharps.
